Can't connect tethering via USB

I can connect my iPhone to my MacBook no problems, but I can't connect via USB. When I plug it in and open network preferences, there is nothing there for my iphone.

What can I do?

Also, is tethering via USB any faster than bluetooth or Wi-Fi?

Thanks

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Have a look at the Apple Knowledge Base article Troubleshooting Personal Hotspot_AKB-TS2756 at:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2756

Make sure that your iOS device, computer, and wireless plan (Cellular Plan) all meet the system requirements for Personal Hotspot. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3574

Hope this will help you through to a successfull solution.

I am not sure if USB-Tethering is any faster, but personaly I prefer it and it appears more reliable in the remote rural area I am in. Furthermore I find it easier to share the connection with other devices connected to my network.
