Did you try this:
Click on "My Settings"
On the Email line click on "My Info"
In the resulting window, click on "Manage Your Account"
Click on Sign In
Under "Alternate Email Addresses", click on "Add Email Address"

Once you've successfully added and verified an alternate email address, you should be able to modify the Primary address. There has to be a current verified address to send the request for verification emails.

Apparently having a MobileMe account prevents me from adding my Me.com email as a second email address since it is already recognized as a unique Apple ID. Nuts. well I guess I just use my preferred user name which is tied to my old email address instead of an alternate user name tied to my new Me.com address. Thanks for the effort nonetheless.

Exactly why can't we change out user name? I see no good reason not to let us change it if we want? It's always tied to your account and email? What gives Apple? Are you control freaks?

I changed mine to what it is now way back when after I was at a creative loss as to what to make it.

C'mon let us have a Username one day amnesty so we can change it one time!

I believe the #1 reason usually given for not allowing user name changes is to prevent confusion. Imagine for instance that you are working with a user to solve a problem & one of you changes your alias. How would either of you know that you are still discussing things with the same person or what info matched up with which user?

Presumbably the database that links all of it together does so by data other than a variable. Generally there is an auto-incrimented number field behind the scenes that is the actual record link.

Behind the scenes info does nothing to ease the confusion I mentioned in my previous post. How would you prevent that?

In any discussion, there is a fundamental need to know who you are talking with. Imagine this was real life & you were discussing something face-to-face with someone in a group. Would you be confused if they suddenly seemed to morph into someone else?

It is no different here, except that the only thing we have to tell one person from the next is our user aliases. If I were R C-R one day & Joe Blow the next, how would you know who to reply to from day to day?

It's not a big deal and I don't want to make it so. It's just that it would be nice if there were something in place to deal with situations like mine. I have a MobileMe account now that I have a Mac. There is no way to associate my MobileMe .ME email address with my current profile, and I would like to reconcile that email with my user ID. So, the logic goes, if I could change the user ID associated with my non-MobileMe email, then that would free up my current (and preferred) user ID to be usable with my MobileMe email address.

Like I say, I'm not trying to make a big deal out of it, but it would be nice if Apple would make some provision to link a MobileMe email with an existing user ID instead of throwing up a brick wall between the two, thus forcing a new MobileMe user (and presumably a new Mac users) from having to choose between continuing to use their established (and presumably preferred) user ID and having to create a new user ID in the forums simply to be able to use their new MobileMe email address.

That's all I'm trying to do.
