Copy Data and Applications to other Mac

Dear all,

I will getting a G5 soon and would like to know the best way to copy all my data including all installed applications to the new computer.

I have used Backup3 tp backup my documents onto DVD. But Im not sure if I can just backup the Applications folder or if I have to install all software again including the patches and plugins, which would be very time consuming.

Thanks for any help
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Regards, Nicole

Your new computer will have Tiger installed so you cannot transfer any applications except third-party applications. All OS X installed applications will be different versions on the G5 than on your current system. You can transfer your Users folder, too. There are several ways this can be done but the easiest is to connect the two computers via a Firewire cable. Then boot the eMac into Target Disk Mode by starting up the computer and immediately after the chime press and hold the "T" key down until the Firewire logo appears on the screen. Then start the G5 normally. Your eMac's hard drive will appear on the G5's Desktop. Use the Migration Assistant located in the Utilities folder to transfer your Users accounts from the eMac to the G5.

Again, like Kappy said transferring the Apps is not a good idea, instead get the same apps, but updated for the new OS. As for transferring your User info, I believe that Tiger has a really useful user-transfer helper. When you boot up your new machine for the first time it will ask you if you'd like to transfer all your user and network information over, just select the right radio button, connect your machines via firewire an away you go. That way you don't have to mess with Target mode and it should transfer everything in one go without a permissions mess, including network settings. HTH.
