Connecting Jabra BT 250 Bluetooth Headset with Powerbook G4 with Tiger OS?

I have recentely updated to Tiger OS. I want to set up the Jabra BT 250 with my G4 for use with Skype BUT when I try to set it up using the Bluetooth Setup Assistant I receive the response, "Failed to setup the headset. Headsets are not supported on your bluetooth hardware". How can I set up the headset with my computer. I would appreciate any and all input. Thank you.

Using a headset needs several steps even needed if you have the latest computer or Mac OS X release. Please make sure to follow them in order.
  1. Download the Apple Bluetooth Firmware Updater
  2. Install it
  3. Launch it from Applications > Utilities > Bluetooth Updater
  4. Apply it to your adapter (takes very long).
  5. Start the Apple Bluetooth Assistant and select Headset. Do not use anything else!
  6. Make your headset Bluetooth visible. Look up the manual of your headset how to do that.
  7. Now select the headset in System Preferences > Sound.
In most cases step 3 is missed. You have to start the already installed updater yourself (do not ask me why). Step 4 fails if your Bluetooth USB adapter is not supported by Apple and you have to go for a D-Link DBT-120 USB adapter.

Alexander

Thanks a ton for your advice and prompt response. I am still having problems though. I have downloaded the Bluetooth Firmware Updater (1.5) and tried to install it BUT when I try to install it, the system doesn't allow me to because it says that my Bluetooth Software is completely up to date. Specifically, it says "You cannot install Bluetooth Update on this volume. Your software is currently up to date." Do you have any ideas?

FANTASTIC! I followed your instructions and now have a working Bluetooth headset... a Bluetrek G2. I have yet to use it on Skype but I tested it with the sound preference in the system preferences and got a signal both ways.

I must mention that I didn't manage to upgrade the firmware the first time around. So I restarted my Powerbook G4, turned off Bluetooth and then started the Bluetooth firmware adapter. It told me that Bluetooth was off and to turn it on, which I did. It then proceeded to install the firmware (download). In all it took a little less then 10 minutes.

Thanks for a good tip.

Newbie here. I have been reading all night about how to get my new Macally BlueWave headset to work. When I goto System Profiler it shows
Apple Bluetooth Software Version 1.7.0f18
Firmware Version 1.526
I get the same message everyone else gets "Failed to set up the headset. Headsets are not supported on your Bluetooth hardware."

What am I missing. I am past the software version of 1.5 and the firmware version of 1.2?

Make sure absolutely nothing is using your Bluetooth module, ti is not visible to others and tuned on – not off. If the same still happens, restart your machine and hold Command-Option-P-R keys to reset PRAM. A second chime will come up if you made it right.

Then you have to try and try again. I suggest to run it over night as it takes hours sometimes.

Again, you do not need this.

There are two software components required for Bluetooth headsets:
– Apple Bluetooth Software
– Apple Bluetooth Firmware Updater
The first is shipping with your Mac OS X. The most current version is 1.7.0 which came with Mac OS X v10.4.4. Never ever apply this 1.5.0 update to a Tiger installation. Even in Mac OS X v10.3.9 this update is useless because the latest version there is 1.5.4. Apple should remove this Apple Bluetooth Software Update 1.5 as it is a potential security problem.

The Apple Bluetooth Firmware Updater is at version 1.2 and will install a Bluetooth firmware in the 2.xxx range – depending on your Bluetooth hardware. And yes, to make the confusion complete this updater makes your Bluetooth hardware compatible to the Bluetooth sepcification in version 1.2. And no, the version of the updater has nothing to do with this. They match by incident.

I apologize if I am frustrating you. I understand what you are saying about the versions now. I am beginning to think this isn't going to work. When I try to run the Bluetooth Firmware Updater from the Utilities Folder and I click on Update, and it goes through a cycle of:
Searching for a device to update
Preparing to update device
Idle
multiple times and after about 5 mins it stays at Idle and the Quit and Update buttons are available again. If I click on update it goes through the same process again; if I click on Quit it says "The bluetooth firmware has not been updated." When I Quit, I have to reboot to get bluetooth to be available again. I have tried 2 things to fix that:
1) reset PRAM by holding Command + Option + P + R until it chimes 2 times.
2) I read in a forum that holding down Option when clicking on the firware update will force the firmware update.

I have no devices attached to Bluetooth when I try the update and I have Discoverable turned off while Bluetooth is turned on.

Neither of the above have worked and I have tried multiple times.

Just a quick note.
I too was having no luck updating the bluetooth firmware on a D-Link (B3). I would simply go idle after a fruitless search for the bluetooth device to update.
Finally, I moved the D-link to another Mac in the same room, and had immediate success in updating. I then moved it back to the original mac and it's working fine with the Jabra headset.
