iPhone 2g unlock

My friend found an iPhone 2g but it was locked with a passcode so we restored it. Then in order to use it it said you needed to insert an AT&T sim card but the only problem was that i am missing a sim card tray to insert in the phone and there seems to be something blocking the insertion of one. So is there a way to use it without inserting a sim card?

Once activated, you can remove the sim, but you will need a sim installed to activate the phone. No sim installed, no activation...there is no way around this fact.
