Missing / No Login Window after Boot up

I have a curious issue if anyone has any solutions or suggestions.
Mac Mini server running 10.6.7 OS X Server. Standard specs across the board with the 1TB storage. What happen is the machine boots up, you see the background "galaxy" backdrop and the mouse, but the actual 'Login' window to log into OS X Server never comes up. The machine is connected to an HDMI -> 21'' Dell screen. We've also tried the Mini Display Port to VGA adapter to another screen but with the same issue.

The services seem to come up fine and be working properly and we can remotely manage the server using the Server Tools and SSH no problem. In fact, I was able to update it from 10.6.4 to 10.6.7 using Server Tools remotely connected to it.

If you try to 'Remote Desktop' to the screen, after a reboot, you can remote to the screen, it will come up and open to a black only screen but that's it. If you try to 'Remote Desktop' to it again, it will just time out, unless you reboot the machine and then it will open the windows again but only to the black (repeatable cycle).

Its clear the hardware is fine without he mouse and background seen fine so it have to be an OS X issue. The machine has been this way for a some time (we've just been remotely administrating it) but its getting to become a significant pain.

Any suggestions?

Did you ever find a solution? I'm having the same problem on a MacPro that is running 10.6.7. I swapped the drives to another MacPro and it booted fine which make me think it is a hardware issue; however, my symptoms are exactly like yours (including SSH and VNC). I am able to boot in safe mode. I'm thinking it is the video card (since Quartz Extreme is disabled in safe mode).

From remote administration can you change the login settings for your server? Specifically (I'm not sure how to access this outside of a GUI) under Accounts Settings "Display login window as: List of users or Name and password". You might have some sort of data corruption for the login window process, especially of plist files that could hamper or prevent display of the login window.

Edit: The directory for loginwindow.app is /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents. I would imagine your answer lies in there, but I can't go deeper than this and I wouldn't advise you to. Reinstalling the OS is probably the most definite way of solving this issue immediately and without further complications or wasted time. Good luck!
