Im going out of usa and i want to take my phone with me! is there a way to unlock it???
  • Nathan-D Level 3 Level 3
Not if you bought it in the US. All AT&T (and Verizon) phones are carrier locked and neither offer unlocking.

No, there is no official way. Neither AT&T or Verizon will unlock an iPhone for anyone for any reason.

All the UK networks will unlock after 3 months, do they give reasons why they wont unlock, is that even when the contract is finished?
  • varjak paw Level 10 Level 10
AT&T says only that they will not unlock iPhones; they give no reason why they will not. And yes, they refuse an unlock even after the contract has expired. There is discussion in the US legislature about this practice, but there probably will be no changes forced anytime soon, if ever.

Thats shocking, once the contract has ended the phone belongs to you

There's no law that says AT&T has to, and it can only stand to lose by helping you. For that matter, Apple only stands to lose. So it's not really shocking.

The good news is you are allowed to unlock the phone (at least in the USA). But you'd have to rely on, say, a Google search, or spend a few bucks.

I wonder if Verizon will unlock their iPhones...

Even if Verizon were to agree to unlock at some point(they do not at present), it's really impractical to Unlock CDMA cell Phones. Most CDMA providers simply won't permit a CDMA phone on their network unless they sold it to you.

I went back and forth between Sprint and Verizon/AirTouch with the same equipment. When it's a cheapo phone they don't care. In some cases you can do it online. Admittedly, it was quite a ways ago.

But I think VZ and Sprint use different 3G bands anyways.

I was told by Verizon that they will unlock the iPhone 4s.  You can only have it done once a year.  I assume, to keep people from getting into the selling unlocked phone business.

The catch is that you can only unlock the phone with a global GSM sim card.  That means you have to travel over seas out of the CDMA network to do it.  BUT, supposedly, when you get back it will still be unlocked, so you can use a T-mobile or straight talk sim card.

Just call them and have them activate the international calling feature and then ask them to put in a unlock request.

That is what I have done.  I am traveling to the UK next week.  I will try to remember come back here and let you know if it works.

Oops I forgot one thing.  You have to be Verizon customer for a certain amount of time. Not a brand new customer.  I can't remember what the limit is but I think it may have been 6 months.  I have been with them for 15 years, so it was no issue.

Did you happen to notice the dates on the other posts in this thread? And OP in any case was asking about an iPhone 4, not an iPhone 4S which didn't even exist when this thread was active.

  • Bob Foneguy Level 1 Level 1

AT&T will unlock this if your off contract.  Since it is a iPhone4 you could be.

  • varjak paw Level 10 Level 10

Again, this thread is well over a year old. The OP's issue is almost certainly long solved or abandoned,

  • Longtrang Level 1 Level 1

I will try to be more polite this time even though I found that being treated as unintelligent to not be very polite, either.

Yes, I saw the dates on the thread.  However, I came across this thread looking for answers to the same question.  After I found some information elsewhere, I came back here to possibly help others in the future who may come looking just like I did.

Do you see how that works?

Thank you for time and have a beautiful day.

  • varjak paw Level 10 Level 10

Yes, I "see how that works". But again, the original poster was asking about an iPhone 4, not an iPhone 4S. and there was no indication that the OP was using Verizon. Posting information about a different product/service just tends to confuse the issue.

'nuff said. It was not my intention to start an argument.

    Regards.
