15 Macbook Pro 2011 can't wake from sleep sometimes

My new MBP 2011 can't wake up from sleep sometimes. This is a replacement machine because my first mbp 2011 had that known freezing issue but i don't recall having this problem.

Today when i tried to wake it up, i saw white streaks across my screen. I took a picture and this is what it looks like http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1662666/Photo%20Apr%2005%2C%202%2031%2040%20PM.jpg

Do you guys think this is a hardware issue or another ATI driver issue?
Should l call apple store for another replacement?

15 MBP 2011 2.2ghz, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

I'll be following this post - I have the exact same problem on my March 2011 MacBook Pro - only 2 weeks old.
Seems to only happen when I let the MacBook go to sleep on it's own without closing the top. The pic of your screen is nearly identical to mine. Freaks me out - I am always afraid the machine is fried.
I have to reset by pressing the power button for an extended period to reboot.

I have the same problem with my MBP 13 (early 2011). I have had this problem since I bought it new. Machine was replaced with identical machine and same problem on the new machine. I have worked with Apple Support and they have not been able to resolve the issue.

Some items tried:
1. SMC reset
2. Remove all startup/launch items
3. Reinstall OS
4. Replace MacBook with same model.
5. Many adjustments to the Energy Saver settings (PMSET)

I have found a workaround that works almost all the time (although I don't feel it is an acceptable solution). When your Mac goes to sleep (idle mode) pressing keys or keyboard wakes up computer (as evidenced by keyboard backlight and sleep indicator going off). Display is black. Clamshell the computer (open and close lid) several times and the screen will come back (with the lines). A second later the screen will redisplay correctly.

Manually putting the computer to sleep works. Display wakes as it should.

Apple please fix this problem.

Just returned from the Genius Bar and after fairly thorough diagnostics and replicating the problem the suggested solution is to bring my machine back in with an external hard drive. They will back up and then migrate items one at a time back on the new Macbook Pro. I am not convinced this will fix, but I'm not the expert either.
On a similar issue, graphics are not refreshing as they should in coverflow.

By the way, the display is exactly like that of the initial poster.

I just wanted to pile onto this thread too and say I am having the same problem described. I don't think it's worth it to get a replacement from Apple since this appears to be a widespread problem. I have no issues when closing the lid and opening it. This sleeps and wakes the computer just fine. The problem only seems to occur if I leave the lid open and let the computer go to sleep on it's own. I also get the white streaks across my screen and the spinning beach ball. I ended up having to power it off and on again. Pretty annoying...

The white streaks is a very rare occurrence in these forums. I would get it checked out.

This is common for some.

Spinning Beachball faq.

After forced shutdowns, use Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
Forced shutdowns can cause directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job.
After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.

Well Dale,

Since Mac hardware and OS and most software are made by Apple, this is not acceptable. Also, sorry for the parallel but just because you own a car and know how to drive it does not imply you're obliged to know how to fix it. Most people invest 2000$ in a Mac because they are known to be the most reliable on the market. People have replaced their Macs with new ones because of this problem only to find out the replacement has the same problem which leads anyone to believe this is not an isolated problem and there must be a common denominator to the not-waking-up-from-sleep issue.

The problem is back in the days when you developed a good product you stayed with it and made minor improvements (over time). Everyone is busy trying to develop the next year's version of their product (which is always marketed as the very zomg "the best", "the most Über") and leaving the current model with it's faults and glitches for the customer to deal with and well if you want a better product buy the next year's model type of ideology. That's that, forget about it kind of attitude. And I am talking in general terms, every single big company. It all comes down to PROFIT. I miss the days of quality products, blockbuster movies, epic artists and entertainers. Yes, the future is very friendly indeed. - Just a man's opinion.

I am also having this problem. My MBP 15 arrived in the mail yesterday and finally got all of my info migrated over. While putting together some dinner the machine went to sleep with the lid open and when I returned to hit the space bar nothing came up. When I closed the lid and reopened it the display was the same as the linked image in alvinzho's post. I ended up having to reboot, but upon trying to recreate the problem I did find that I could put it to sleep using Option + Command + Eject and then wake it to resume the display. Let's hope this is addressed in 10.6.8.

After reading this post I uninstalled Air Display and computer sleep is working correctly.

This is still early but I will post again if the problem reappears.

I got my 15" Macbook Pro 4 days ago and I'm having the same issue. I also just uninstalled Air Display. Let's see what happens.

Are all experiencing this issue have Air Display installed?

Hi. Dave from Avatron here. We've been testing on a new MBP and haven't been able to replicate the problem. However we do have a working theory about the cause.

Our theory is that Migration Assistant simply fails to invalidate the kernel extension cache when it should. The result is that when you migrate to a new machine with a different built-in display driver configuration, it can't wake from sleep. Or more precisely, it can't wake to Intel graphics if the last graphics adapter used was the Radeon one.

If we're right, then one of these steps should fix the problem:

1. Install a kext (for example, simply reinstall Air Display), OR

2. Uninstall a kext (this is why the problem went away when you uninstalled Air Display), OR

3. "Touch" the kernel extensions directory in Terminal, OR

4. Boot in Safe Mode.

Then reboot.

If you can't wake from sleep, please try one of these possible solutions, and let us all know how it goes.

I have tried everything suggested on these posts including having Apple replace my 2011 15" MacBook Pro all to no avail. Dave from Avatron's posts seem to be the most promising, although I have never installed Avatron's software. Even after installing the latest OS update and accompanying firmware update the wake from sleep issue reappeared after a couple of days. I read somewhere that by not using migration assistant one could negate this issue. After doing a fresh install all seems ok. We will see, so far so great. I like the idea about using the "touch" command but have no idea how to do this. Cheers

Hi Dave..and the all rest of you,

I have exactly the same problem as discussed above with my 1 month old 13" MBP (including sleep problem, wake proble, white lines, and clamshell open/close to restore it).

I do not have Air Display and I did not use the Migration Assistant to put my files back. Still I have the problem. I did an fresh install, I checked the disk, did a long hardware check, fixed permisions, reset SMC, touch the kernel extintion dir, boot in safe mode....I don't see any errors in console....so I do not have any idea what/where/how to repair it...

The machine is perfect (except this very very anoying problem).

Any suggestions are welcome. Maybe we should make a list of software we have installed and see if we discover a patern.

After around three weeks after reinstalling the OS and not using migration assistant to get all my software back the wake from sleep issue is back. Have done all the recommended fixes now including turning off automatic graphic switching and the issue still manifests itself. The laptop was also replaced a month ago because of this issue and the new one had the same issue.
