Why won't Gmail set up properly on iPad2

I am trying to sync google apps with my iPad2. I have done this successfully MANY MANY times before by
- going to mail settings
- choosing Exchange
- putting in the user name, server (m.google.com), password

Once completed, I get a pop-up that asks me to enter the password, which I had already put in settings. I enter the password and it tells me it is wrong. I have retyped the password MANY times in both settings and in the pop-up to make sure I got it right. I also double-checked that the password is correct online, which it is. Why is it doing this?

Gmail (IMAP)
mail.google.com

Here are the instructions for adding a google account if you want to sync mail, calendar and contacts (note that it says Microsoft Exchange - if you do IMAP you don't get all of the features):

1. Open the Settings application on your device's home screen.
2. Open Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
3. Press Add Account....
4. Select *Microsoft Exchange*. iOS 4.0+ allows multiple Exchange accounts. However, if you're on a device that doesn't let you add a second account, you could also use CalDAV to sync Google Calendar and IMAP to sync Gmail.

Enter Account Info
5. In the Email field, enter your full Google Account email address. If you use an @googlemail.com address, you may see an "Unable to verify certificate" warning when you proceed to the next step.
6. Leave the Domain field blank.
7. Enter your full Google Account email address as the Username.
8. Enter your Google Account password as the Password. (If you are a 2-step verification user, please use an application-specific password instead.)
9. Tap Next at the top of your screen.
9a. Choose Cancel if the Unable to Verify Certificate dialog appears.
10. When the new Server field appears, enter m.google.com.
11. Press Next at the top of your screen again.

Ok. (You didn't mention that so we can't assume. BTW, adding as IMAP would give you calendar, but not contacts.)

I normally use Gmail's Exchange protocols on my Windows Mobile phone, and it's currently syncing so Google's server appear to be up. So I added Gmail with the Exchange protocol to my iPad and it works for me. (iPad1 but with iOS4.3.1 so it should be the same as the iPad2.)

Don't bite my head off, but I have to ask: are you absolutely, positively, completely certain that you're typing in the correct username and password? (username@gmail.com or whatever. Caps? 'Cuz you've never typo-ed a password before...never, ever, never. 😉 )

LOL, no bites coming your way from me!

I can't figure it out. I must have done it 15 times and got the same problem every time. the 16th time, it worked. In each of the previous 15 times I started from scratch creating an Exchange account. Did I mistype my user name or password? I find it hard to believe I did it to one or the other each time but I may have.

Anyway, it is working now and I don't know why. Thanks!

Hello to Ian and other respondents,

I have exactly the same question - identical to Ian's first posting. I'm at delete and reenter account try number 5. Would rather not go to 16 unless there is something magical about 16 tries ;-)

Can anyone explain why I do not get my 2-step code on iphone when I try to log in to gmail with my iPad2? Is this a problem with gmail 2 step system?

I had the same problem and I think I just solved it.

I used the Gmail configuration (not Exchange), with MYUSER@gmail.com as username. But instead of my regular password, I used a Application-specific password.

Go to https://accounts.google.com/IssuedAuthSubTokens#accesscodes :

User uploaded file

Generate a new application specific password by choosing a name (like IPAD2) and click on the icon.

You will get a 16 digit code:

User uploaded file

Use this new code as your gmail password while configuring your account on the ipad and it will work!!

I hope that works for you guys! Happy new year!

Thank you very mucho.

i thought i was going INSANE!!! You know "insanity", keep doing the same thing over and over but hoping for a different outcome <"

For ipad2.

I knew my password was correct but it wasn't my specific password.

i have the two step-verification and used that specific password and your directions were perfect.

Im keeping your name for future issues.
