Applications showing .app in Finder

How do I get my applications to stop showing .app after their name? For example, Safari shows up as Safari.app in Finder and in my Applications folder as with all of my other applications.

Macbook Pro (2010), Mac OS X (10.6.7)

In the Finder, choose Finder -> Preferences, click Advanced and uncheck the box labeled "Show all filename extensions".
