Updated iPhone and lost everything...

So my girlfriend plugged in her iPhone to her laptop last night to update it and charge it. When she updated it, it also seemed to restore it. Her contacts seem to be there but every number shows up as a new number. All the Apps are gone and her pics are still there. I know iTunes makes a back up of it I was wondering how to go about doing that? She has an iPhone 3G.

Welcome to the discussions,
every backup replaces the old one, except those backups you used to restore from. So check the backups listed in iTunes/Settings/Devices if you can find a backup dated before she synced for the last time to restore from. If you included the backup folder in your backup routine, restore the folder again to have the latest backup possible. More info can be found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
