Mail shows incoming mail in activity but no mail or fewer appear inbox

Mail shows incoming mail in activity in lower left box but no mail or fewer appear in inbox. This morning it said 24 incoming mail but none appeared. I logged in directly to At&T account thru Safari and they don't show up there either. Any idea where these mysterious mails are coming from or going. I have also heard mail sent sound sometimes when first coming out of sleep even though I didn't send anything.

and also do you have any other computers connecting through mail to the same account, the reason i ask is it could well be that mail is downloading emails that have already been downloaded to another computer or program that has stripped the mail server you use of everything but its headers, therefore mail is showing incoming mail as it downloads the headers but nothing appears after it reconciles with the mail servers because there is effectively nothing there. AT&T would not see anything after a mail download because it would strip there servers too, that is of course if you have mail set to delete copies from the server after downloads...

Hey Mystified!

Do you have any folders set up in your at&t account?
If so, do you have over 1000 messages in those folders?

If not, you have a weird problem, have you tried resetting mail (trash mail pref, reset account)

If you do have alot of email in your account, AppleMail is very slow at downloading/archiving lots of mail. It takes about 5 hours to download 2.5gb worth of email aka 7300 messages of sent/inbox/saved etc.
