i7 CPU Spikes - worse than Core2Duo!

I just got a spanking new 2.2 i7 MacBook Pro, and I'm having WORSE performance with Logic 9 than my old 3.06 Core2Duo MacBook. This is unacceptable. One thread of 8 shown in the CPU meter is pulsing high, spiking in the red while logic is just sitting idle. The other 7 show practically nothing.

Any insight into what's going on, or what I can do to fix it?

Not sure if changing the cores from automatic helped, was showing 8, now 4, but seems like no change with CPU usage. One 3rd party plug (Magix Vandal) was causing very high CPU usage, and core audio spikes when changing songs- so I got rid of it and now Logic is usable again. Still having very high pulsing and spiking that seems to get better the longer Logic is open, oddly.

Hi Joshua. I had high CPU spikes using Logic Pro 9 on my brand new MB Pro 2011, 2.2gHz i7, with 4gb ram.

After forcing Logic Pro to run in 64bit mode i got much better performance.

In your applications folder, select Logic Pro.app and open up "Get Info" for logic pro, uncheck "Open in 32-bit mode" under the General pane.

Hi,

I found something really interesting today, something which was an issue in GarageBand years ago. Like so many others I've had issues with sudden CPU spikes and uneven CPU load in Logic 9 (I'm on a 27 inch Thunderbolt i5 iMac with an Apogee Duet 2 audio interface) and I've been experimenting with disabling inputs, ensuring an audio track is always selected when not recording, trying to optimize things using buses - all the normal stuff. The issues still persisted however and was driving me nuts.

Suddenly I recalled this old Garageband issue where the graphics were using a lot of CPU and the solution was to zoom out until the whole song fit on one screen, i.e. avoid the live scrolling. I tried this in Logic today (by de-selecting the "running man" catch icon in the arrange window) and to my surprise the CPU load was dramatically reduced. Also tried making the window smaller, bascially limiting the area Logic needs to redraw - same effect!

Now this seems like a real bug to me, can't understand why the GUI update thread should ever be able to interfere with the audio, but at least on this iMac if I exapnd the arrange window to fill all 27 inches of screen real estate and rec-enable an audio track I can easily reproduce the problem.

Hope this helps someone.
