App installation stuck on "Waiting..."

I tried installing an app on my iPad (with OS 4.2.1) over our WiFi network, and it was taking an extremely long time without the progress bar even starting to fill up.

Now there is a greyed-out icon for the app with the word "Waiting..." and an unfilled progress bar underneath. So the progress bar never even begins to fill.

I tried rebooting; I tried hard rebooting; I cannot tap to delete the icon; I have removed the app from my iTunes library and resynced. No matter what I do, the greyed-out icon is still there with no change. I gess my best option now is just to restore from a backup, but I would very much like to avoid doing so if at all possible. Any suggestions?

Try a System Reset:
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.

A System Reset does not remove any apps, music, movies, etc. nor does it cause any settings to revert back to default.

Also, you might wish to download the iPad-2 User Guide. Pay special attention to page 162. Note that this Guide also applies to the iPad-1 with IOS 4.3 except for those functions that are not supported by the hardware.

Finally, the User Guide can be downloaded at no charge via iBooks and a less comprehensive version of the Guide is included as a Safari bookmark.
