Adding another voice to the crowd.

Bought a brand new Apple TV 3 on the 16th, and am also experiencing the homesharing issue. Homesharing between an early 2011 Macbook Pro and the ATV3 over wifi. Latest version of Lion/iTunes, etc. Exactly as others have described, will work for 5-10 minutes and then my computer disappears from homeshare. All other services work (Netflix, streaming movie straight from iCloud, Photostream, etc). Turning off and on homesharing in iTunes doesn't seem to work. I've restarted iTunes on the Macbook and it'll come back only sometimes. Other times I've needed to restart the ATV but that isn't consistent either. Some combination of rebooting programs/homesharing/hardware is needed for it to work.

I've also tried the ATV on three different networks with the same Macbook Pro (home, work and at my dad's house) and I've experienced the problem on all three networks.

This is what has worked for me - It has been 3 weeks now without a single drop. I did this in airport utility  for my airport express but would like to think that you can do it with other routers as well. Open airport utility, and then

select the Network tab and under the DHCP Reservation click the plus button, add a description and enter your mac address for your computer then click save. Then repeat the steps for your ATV.  Also to hedge my bets I also changed my Airport Wifi channel to a less crowded one. Again I havent had a single drop in 3 weeks!

This started with the most recent update for iTunes and Apple TV.  Before the most recent update homesharing worked great, but now it's a train wreck.  I have two Apple TVs (older and newer version).  The older version is dropping the homesharing network less frequently while the new Apple TV only maintains the newtork for about five minutes.  I have gone all 11 pages of posts and I have tried most of the solutions, but nothing appears to solve the problem.

    Set up:

    Win 7 - 64 bit

    Airport Extreme (new version)

Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation ?)  - one has 150 gig hard drive and the new little black one.

Wifi signal is strong and Apple TV can access Netflix, iMatch, etc without problem.  The only thing that doesn't work is homesharing.

I wonder if Apple's new agreement regarding iMatch (for streaming movies and TV Shows) didn't involve them walking away from the homesharing network service.  In order to stream movies they decided to quietly the let homesharing die.  Maybe the reasons they haven't solved the problem is that they are no longer interested in solving the problem and they no longer have their best and brightest worrying about this issue.

Apple - homesharing is the only reason I bought the Apple TV.  Please fix this problem.

I'm having the same issues. My ATV2 is connected directly to my router, so it isn't a Wi-Fi issue. Home Sharing keeps dropping. Even when I get it to connect, new shows I have just purchased do not show up. This is very frustrating. I think the lesson here is that Apple is becoming like Microsoft, and you should wait to perform upgrades so that all of the bugs can get worked out first.

I'm seeing this behavior as well after 12 hours or so.  Restarting iTunes always fixes the issue.  For some reason after about a day apple tv just will not connect to the computer.  Restart iTunes and it instantly connects.

Not too sure if my issues started with the new iTunes version or the new apple tv SW.  Either way I hope they fix this soon.

I used to have this issue but then moved to an Airport Extreme and focused on isolating my wifi channel to something less popular in my area.  That seemed to fix my issues for the most part.  Check out iStumbler for those with issues and see if it is possible that the issue is coming from this.

I had the same problem. My Apple TV 3rd generation was dropping out my home sharing each 3 or 4 minutes. I changed my router to a Cisco Linksys E4200 and it's now working fine since many hours.

Before, I had an Apple Air Port Extreme (5th generation).

I think you got lucky.  I tried reserving IP addresses by MAC address and no change.  I can't even view TV shows I've purchased and downloaded on my MAC to my Apple TV without it ending 3-4 minutes into the episode due to this issue.  Man, Apple has to do something about this...

I ordered an AirPort Express and a 3rd Gen AppleTV as soon as it was available to order - my first and only Apple TV. As a side note it arrive 3/15 a day ahead of release.

Anyhow, I read about the ATV losing WiFi connection on Kirkville, however I had my ATV connected via Ethernet. I hadn't yet set up any Homesharing yet. I immediately turned on Homesharing on my PC, iPad 2 and ATV as well as setting the ATV to use the AirPort Express wireless connection.

Once I knew everything was connected and each device could share my library from my PC, I set the ATV start playing music. So far for the last hour, it has not lost connection {knock on wood}. I'm going to keep it playing to see if it ever does lose connection. I'm obviously hoping that it doesn't.

You always hear about the "bad things" on forums (for obvious reasons), I hope to be one of the voices that say things are fine!

I'll try to post later to see if the ATV is still playing in another hour.

    Hi everyone!

I am having the same issue as everyone else. However I didn't buy Airport Express because my place is small and I don't really see the need to utilize the feature of APE. My APPTV is the most recent version as the employees at the Apple store just told me that the 3rd generation APPTV newest version came out a few days after the Ipad 3 was released. I just bought this past week 3-20-12 and I have tried everything. Playing my music connected to the ethernet and after 5 minutes it just stops/drops home sharing. I currently have it unplugged from my ethernet and my music played for 5 minutes and then it stopped and asked that I turn on Home Sharing.

I am thinking about going back to my 1st generation APPTV as it was a solid hard drive and could hold 160GB of media. I bought 3rd Gen APPTV because I was having troubles deleting TV shows that I didn't want anymore. This new 3rd Gen APPTV is just a flash unit(1 directional port) same as existing, but I think because it may be flash is where we could be having our problems with dropping/stopping.

Also, forgot to mention, is anyone else experiencing stopping/dropping once you close/turn off your MBP or MBA?

It goes back to asking to Turn on Home Sharing, then once I open up my MBP/MBA it will come back again after a few minutes.

I had this issue to and did the folowing 2 steps to solve that problem.

    1) Make sure your firewall allows incoming traffic on tcp port 49152

    2) Deaktivate the deep Standby (Sleep) Mode in ATV. By default this is turned on.

Knock on wood. Until now no problems anymore...

Seems to be inbound firewall restrictions.  You want your profile for Bonjour & Bonjour Service to be PRIVATE.  This solved my issues instantly. Good Luck.

Im running AppleTV2 with iTunes on a Windows 7 PC with a Cisco WRVS440N. All connections are hardwired.

  • lantzn Level 1 Level 1

That's actually normal. Home Sharing with a computer is linked to your computer's iTunes Library. If you logout, put to sleep or quit iTunes it will disconnect your home sharing.

  • slammy212 Level 1 Level 1

How can I prevent this from not happening?

Anyway I can set it up without home sharing? And just stream with no drops or it going to sleep, I don't want to have my computer on all night long as I like music playing sometimes through the night in my house.
