Apr 16, 2012 12:58 PM in response to Charmiepooby tkblueyonder,in the past when i was using windows based machines in my home on a wireless network (approx 4/5 yrs ago) my homesharing use to drop out the whole time.... basically i dont subscribe to the ATV3 software being screwed since the update i beleive its all in each users configuration between devices and and their router, even when people are using wired connections they are connecting via a router right?
when i get chance i need to strip down my entire set up and gain access to my router config page ( wont let me in via default password Doh!) i will update to the latest firmware, reinstall my app remote on my iphone 4, if i still dont get a reliable connection i am going to go to the apple store and get a time capsule (i need backup capabilities and the fact its wireless sells it to me plus has a router built in) ... a sales person the last time i was there suggested i take one home and try it out as they give me 14 day money back guarentee i really want to nail this one as its doing my head in bigtime now!

Apr 17, 2012 1:45 AM in response to tkblueyonderby Charmiepoo,Tkblueyonder.......sorry, can't agree with that assumption. Firstly......as I and others have stated before.....there is no trouble connecting to my wireless router with the ATV. I can access iTunes Match just fine, i can access Netflix, YouTube, Photo Stream, and my hubby accesses his hockey games, and none of those things drop out. If it was simply a connection problem everything would be dropping out.
Secondly.....i had no problem at all with Homesharing dropping out all during the many months i had been using either of our 2 ATVs, until this last update. That is when it began.
Thirdly......i am using iTunes on a PC, but, my daughter is using a MacBook Pro and is now having the same issues with Homesharing since the update.
So.....if it wasn't this most recent update, why was everything fine before? Why, when I have had Homesharing drop out, have I still been able to listen to my music albums on my television via iTunes Match and the ATV, or watch a movie on Netflix instead? Why would my network settings on both ATVs show full bars for my connection?
I believe this is a problem with the ATV software and how it was configured for Homesharing.

Apr 17, 2012 2:09 AM in response to Charmiepooby philfromsakai,Charmiepoo, you said it. This thread is just spinning in pointless cycles with the same suggestions popping up again from the same users. Check your computer isn't sleeping. Your router has a weak connection. None of this explains the 'why' of the situation: why were our products initially working fine, and why did they suddenly stop working properly. If some people were able to fix their problems by replacing their routers, or reconfiguring router and port settings, then that's great, but still sheds no light on why the problem suddenly occurred.
I can't believe some users never even got a couple of months use out of the homesharing feature before it crapped out.

Apr 20, 2012 12:39 PM in response to philfromsakaiby tkblueyonder,Just a quick update....
this evening connected both my AT3 and my Mac to the router with wired LAN connections and working like a dream hasnt dropped the connection once so trial and error i figured OK lets unplug a LAN and trial so unplugged my LAN from the MAC and BOOOOM! dropped the connection straight away ATV/Iphone4/MAC all lost sharing capabilities with one another.
I figure i need to try and get into my Buffalo Wireless Router and and update the firmware im convinced this will work for me (fingers Crossed).I could just plumb in LAN cables and job done but i figure whats the point in having all this wireless technology if you cant use it so i really need to nail this. Just gotta figure out how to get into my router config page now thats another story!

Apr 24, 2012 9:36 PM in response to beancounter_1by duckmiester,I just purchased my ATV2 and I'm very disappointed. After 10 min or so I get the same message saying "Turn on Home Sharing in iTunes", or "iTunes libraries that have Home Sharing turned on will appear in Computers". It's stupid, if I shut down iTunes then re-open the application it works again for a while then Home Sharing drops out again. It's not my router and I'm running a "Wired "connection, I will be taking mine back that's for sure. I purchased the ATV2 to stream my movies to my Samsung Smart TV after trying other media streaming software, I'd heard of Apple TV and thought "ït's Apple it's asure thing", how wrong I was.

Apr 24, 2012 10:21 PM in response to duckmiesterby emielstroeve,Please read through the numerous discussions, there are a few things to try. And yes, it's an apple atv bug and they're probably working on an update.
For me switching to wireless on the atv did the trick.
On the smart tv, why don't you stream directly from some sort of dlna nas to the tv? More flexibility.....
Cheers
Emiel

Apr 24, 2012 10:53 PM in response to emielstroeveby duckmiester,I just tried switching to wireless and still no good. I have Plex Media Server on my Samsung unit but it too has its short commings, mainly with FF & RW. I will try experimenting with other DLNA streaming software.

Apr 26, 2012 5:35 PM in response to duckmiesterby Ichibo,I'm just throwing my handle into the hat here, but Home Sharing has been crashing on me as well. Everything had been working just fine up until a couple of days ago. Now, however, whenever I try to navigate my iMac's iTunes Library on Apple TV while using a remote (including the one that came with the ATV2) Home Sharing crashes and ATV2 tells me to turn homesharing back on. Home Sharing has always worked just fine when I navigate my iTures playlist from my iMac. It has got to be a problem with the Home Sharing software or the Airplay software and it's connection to Home Sharing. The error message is:
objc[370]: garbage collection is OFF
*** error for object 0x7f807a5b6dc8: incorrect checksum for freed object - object was probably modified after being freed.

Apr 26, 2012 7:54 PM in response to Jeet Kby madirishman,I've been frustrated by the Home Sharing dropping out too. I made some changes to my setup recently and my problems have (at least for now) disappeared, so I thought I'd share them. The problem was fairly recent and following a suggestion on another thread I began to wonder if someone had moved into my vicinity with a wireless router that might be causing problems with my connection. My Actiontec router with Verizon FiOS was running the same channel and frequency as another (fairly strong) signal - this according to the free iStumbler software - so I tried changing my adapter's channel and also increased by network security settings for good measure. Since I did this, I have so far been golden.
Best of luck, everyone. I know how frustrating this issue can be.
Regards,
Patrick

Apr 27, 2012 12:24 AM in response to Jeet Kby hilly2000,Here's something a bit strange I noticed. Many people (myself included) seem to lose the ATV connection with Home Sharing on their iTunes source PC/Mac, but they can continue to access internet sources on the ATV or the iTunes source PC/Mac without a problem.
With my situation, I can see the that the ATV downloads the entire show/podcast/movie, ie. it has been fully downloaded to the onboard memory - but despite this, there is obviously some sort of authentication hiccup - I guess the ATV periodically checks with Home Sharing and the source PC/Mac that everythig is OK, but if for some reason the check fails (and I'm guessing if for some reasong the ATV or iTunes doesn't get a response within a certain period of time), then Home Sharing just gives up, even though both devices actualyl do have a connection (proven by being able to transfer data to/from an internet source, just not between iTunes/ATV).
Wondering if the last iTunes or ATV update introduced a tighter spec on authentication challenge/response timing - because like many others, I too had no probems until the last update

Apr 27, 2012 5:07 AM in response to Jeet Kby AndrewTurner,I also had a problem, but then switched all of my home systems (wireless & ethernet) to manual DNS settngs with my Apple Airport Extreme IP. It does all the NAT/external DNS work for my other devices, now my home sharing with iTunes is extremely fast.

May 2, 2012 3:39 AM in response to Jeet Kby Shyrak,I'd hate to mention this, but is this happening with movies or shows 'not' downloaded from apple?
-
May 2, 2012 4:01 AM in response to Shyrakby beatmunga,Yes.
Including projects made on that mac in iMovie.
Incidentally, I streamed audio via a nice free little utility called Airfoil (using a DJ App) from the same Macbook as I have my iTunes library on to the Apple TV for hours on end, uninteruppted this weekend.
Netflix, YouTube, rented movies all perfectly fine on ATV.
This is a problem with iTunes, I'm convinced. How can it not be when everything else works?
If Airplay works fine from iTunes, though - it would seem that Home Sharing functionality has been compromised in later iTunes updates. Just to repeat what I've said before: Home Sharing is not mentioned once on the Apple Store info about Apple TV. Airplay, Netflix etc are mentioned straight away
This cannot be a coincidence. Apple have quietly dropped Home Sharing without telling anyone. Obviously, this is a controversial move for people like myself who bought Apple TV because of Home Sharing. No wonder they are afraid to come clean.
What is happening to Apple? First Lion and now this. I think that the quality decline is well underway.

May 2, 2012 4:08 AM in response to beatmungaby Shyrak,Just had to ask the question. It's a weird one. It's been happening with previous versions of iTunes as well as atv software.
It's is frustrating and unfortunately I can't help with a solution.
I guess we just need to pester apple officially rather than hitting up the forums, since they don't really read them.
