iTunes error on startup

I have used iTunes for a long time without having any major problems, but just a couple days ago iTunes decided to start giving me an error message on start-up.

I open iTunes, the program comes up, and while it is "Accessing the iTunes Store," an error message comes up and it says: "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close."

I have tried restarting my computer, reinstalling iTunes, closing Quicktime before I open iTunes, and deleting the "com.apple.iTunes.plist" preference file, but none of these have proven to be successful for me.

Any help would be appreciated.

Generate another of those errors, please, and click on the "Click here" link in the error message box.

What ModName and ModVer are you getting for the error? (Precise spelling please.)

If the error is a BEX, and thus doesn't give a ModName or ModVer, let us know what the P1 through P9 items say instead.

🙂 Perfect, thanks.

The ModName is webkit.dll and the ModVer is 5.33.20.25

That's the rendering engine that iTunes uses to display the store contents. So if that's damaged, that would make sense of the crash immediately after the Store starts to load.

It's an Apple Application Support program file. (Apple Application Support is where single copies of program files used by multiple different iTunes applications are kept. webkit.dll is also the Safari web browser rendering engine, so it goes in Apple Application Support rather than in the iTunes or Safari program files.)

Let's try something relatively simple first.

Restart the PC. Now go into your Add or Remove programs control panel. Select "Apple Application Support", click "Change" and then click "Repair".

Restart the PC again, and now try launching iTunes again. Do you still get the error, or does it stay launched this time?

During my first restart, my computer ran a disk check (Chkdsk), which I had never previously seen. I was not exactly sure why this happened, but after it was done my computer restarted normally.

However, when I tried to open iTunes (I was wondering if the Disk Check had fixed my problem), a new batch of errors came up.

The first one said: "The application or DLL C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support\Webkit.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette."

The second one said: "iTunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes. Error 7 (Windows error 193)."

I thought that reinstalling iTunes might work, so I did, but the same two errors came up after the re-installation. I then proceeded with your instructions and I repaired "Apple Application Support" and restarted my computer.

After the restart, iTunes was back to normal. Neither my original error nor the second set of errors appeared again. I can access my library and the iTunes Store again.

My problem has been solved. Thank you very much for your quick assistance b noir, you are awesome! 🙂

🙂 Excellent news! Glad you're up and running again Shadart, and many thanks for the detailed account of your resolution. (That contains a lot of the classical symptoms of a damaged Apple Application Support program file, and will be helpful for other folks searching around for solutions to their problems.)
