iPad 2 won't rotate orientation

I received my iPad 2 today, and since turning it on I've not been able to get it to rotate the orientation at all - not on the home screen, lock screen, or in apps - it's just completely stuck on the standard portrait orientation with the home button below the screen.

I've rebooted it, tried a restore in iTunes, updated to 4.3.1, *checked the orientation lock* (both the physical switch and in the multitasking bar) and repeated all of these in various orders many times to no avail.

The accelerometer seems to be working as Labyrinth 2 HD plays fine so I'm guessing it's a software issue, but I just can't fix it. It seems other people have had this issue, but the standard answers - reboot, check orientation locks - aren't working. As you can imagine this is incredibly frustrating (and disappointing), so if anyone has any other suggestions I'd be grateful.

Did you go to Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: - and make sure the setting there is correct? - just in case?

You could also try the hard reset - hold down on the sleep button and the home button at the same time for about 10 seconds until the white Apple logo appears and the iPad restarts.

Yes, I've already tried both of those things. No luck.

EDIT: I should mention that some of the hard resets have put the iPad into recovery mode, demanding to be restored in iTunes.

I am having the same issue. iPad 2 was working fine last night. This morning, it is stuck in portrait mode. The screen lock is not on, it is not the side switch. I tried both a soft and hard restart. Tried connecting to iTunes, to no avail.

It may not be on the side switch, but have you checked in the multi-tasking area?
Double tap the home button, swipe to the right and then you'll see the orientation lock on the left.
Check that it's not set to lock.

Check the right side of the status bar at the top of the screen.
Does it show the screen orientation lock?

double click the home button, scroll to the left and unlock rotation. This worked for me.

Or I heard there are alot of issues with 4.3.1. 4.3.2 is coming next week.

Just got mine and it was working fine the first day and the second day it stopped rotating. It was stuck on portrait, and i left it on the smart cover stand, slight angle...it went to sleep after a while, and when i woke it back up...it was in landscape..but still stuck...won't rotate back to portrait.

Update: Went to the local Apple Store and they claim they have never seen this before and need to replace my brand new device. Sigh. This does not make me feel confident in my purchase.

Uh no. Clearly that is not the issue. If a new off the shelf device is going to cause problems after a week, this device may be more hassle than it is worth. I had already set up the device and had work saved on it which has now been wiped by the "genius" folks. It is unrecoverable. Doesn't say a lot for the productivity I was banking on when I made the purchase.
