iTunes Server with D-Link DNS-323 NAS - not showing up in Shared list

Hi

I bought a DNS-323 to hold all my music. I am trying to get it working with iTunes.

I have enabled the iTunes Server function on the DNS-323, selecting which folder I want to use for music, and have allowed the device to 'refresh'. It then tells me it should appear in iTunes.

I have installed iTunes 10.2.1.1, but under Sharing, the only option that appears is Home Share. The DNS-323 does not appear in the list.

I have tried rebooting the NAS to no effect.

I've searched a lot on the subject and have seen that iTunes 10 causes issues with iTunes Server on a NAS device, but many people were saying that 10.1 fixes it. However, the threads then seem to go dead with no definitive answer.

Can anyone tell me where iTunes Server is still supported in 10.2.1.1, and if so if there are any suggestions on how to get the device to show up? ALL I get is the Home Sharing option under the Shared heading in iTunes. I tried iTunes 9.2.1 but had the same issue.

Thanks in advance

Dave

Ok, I've tested on my laptop, which is running XP 32-bit and connects to my network wirelessly, and with iTunes 10.2.1.1, it successfully finds and can play music from the NAS.

I then formatted my main machine (which is running Windows 7 Professional 64bit) and did a fresh install of the OS, and iTunes 10.2.1.1, and the NAS still does not show up.

The issue must therefore either be down to:

+ The wired connection on my main PC (I'm running it through Powerlan adaptors so could potentially be something here?)
+ The OS (Windows 7 vs Windows XP)
+ iTunes 64 bit vs iTunes 32 bit

I'll do more tests and post back later in case anyone else is having the same problem - but can anyone confirm that they have gotten a NAS to show up in iTunes using Windows 7 and/or the 64bit version of iTunes?

You first have to copy all of the content that you want into the D-link folders. Then launch itunes and under shared click on the Dlink. It may take awhile to show content but it will. You may have to map the network drive for the Dlink though to give the computer a push in the right direction. Look in left pane when itunes is running and about half way down you'll see Shared D-link. Click on it. Don't go in the tabs at top of itunes!

Thanks 47T's

When you say copy all of the content into the D-link folders, what do you mean by D-Link folders?

I've got all my music in:

\\NAS\Volume_1\Music\(artist)\(album)\(mp3's here)

I then go to the web interface and enable itunes server, pointing it to:

\\NAS\Volume_1\Music

I click apply, and it refreshes. It takes about 1 or 2 minutes to get to 100%, so it seems like it is doing something.

Once completed, I open iTunes and I don't get anything under the Shared heading in the left menu, other than Home Sharing. No NAS showing up.

I have the device mapped as a network drive but no joy.

Do you have it working? And if so, are you using iTunes 10.2? If so, at least I know that it works for someone!

Ok I'm basically answering my own thread as I go here but never mind - hopefully it'll be of use to someone at some point.

The issue is to do with the powerlan adaptors after all - the adaptors you plug into a wall socket. I have proven this by:

+ laptop works when connected to my network wirelessly
+ laptop works when connected to the network by Ethernet directly into router
+ laptop does not work when connected into powerlan adaptor (which in turn connects to router)

The pc being windows 7 and using 64 bit iTunes was just a red herring. The powerlan plugs are the problem. I'll confirm this and then mark the question as answered if that is the case as it doesn't look to be a iTunes problem as such.

Woohoo! I just figured out, after many hours of searching the Internet, why my D-Link 323 wasn't showing in ITunes as a Shared device.

Do not select "Root" in the itunes SERVER configuration page.

I had to point directly to my music folder "called MP3" in Volume_1 and it popped up right away.

(Volume_1/Shared Data/Music/MP3)

I had also tried "Shared Data" but it didn't work. Maybe it didn't like the other type of file/extension.

Hope it fixes your problems too.

I have directed my DND 323 to an exact folder of MP3s and it still does not work. Can someone confirm what exactly is happening that is preventing it to show up? Is it because of the sub folders? in that case it seems a little ridiculous to keep all of your mp3s in one folder.

I am using my mac connected wirelessly to my router ( I have mapped my DNS 323 and reads fine)

and a SMC D3GN router.

Let me know if anyone has some insight.

Thank you

Hey Travis, mine only worked when I pointed to a folder with all music files: mp3, m4a... (all separated by artists folders)

After that, I could see my DNS 323 but I couldn't drag any songs to any playlists. I could also see some playlists on my DNS 323 but I couldn't modify them or add any.

I lost 3 days trying everithing but nothing worked. In the end, I clicked on the itunes "File" menu (Top left) and selected "Add folder to library" and I selected the folder with all my music. It must have taken 10 hours to import all the songs. It took me around 1:30 hours to rename over 300 songs (out of 1700) because they weren't properly named. They were all at the bottom of the list.

On my second computer, I cheated because I clicked on "Edit" in iTunes and selected "Preferences". On the "Advanced" tab, I changes the ITunes Media Folder Location and pointed to the one I created with the first computer. The music appeared (I didn't have to rename 300 songs again) and the playlists I had created were also there. This way, I only manage one computer and it should chage the other one.

I'm not sure what will happen when I add new songs but I had selected the music folder on the first computer so I hope they are added automatically. I think I might have to go back to the DNS 323 and do a refresh on the iTunes server to see new songs but I haven't tried it yet.

Hope it helps,
