Is there a way to watch 1080p video?

So the iPad's support docs list 720p as the maximum supported resolution. My guess is that has to be a software limitation if for not other reason than there are devices with identical stats that play 1080p video.

My question to all of you is has anyone found a way to watch 1080p video on an iPad 2? That's the only area (and I don mean only) where I feel the Galaxy Tab has a real advantage over the iPad 2.

27" iMac11,3, Mac OS X (10.6.7), Intel Core i7 2.93Ghz / 12GB RAM / 1TB HDD / ATI 5750HD @ 1GB VRAM

None. What's the benefit of not having to re-encode an entire library of movies just for one device? Significant. See the point?

I'm starting to see that it's possible to stream them over the network, apparently, thanks the the glory that is Airplay. I'm looking into solutions that would allow me to allow my iMac to access content on my NAS and use that to stream to my iPad.

Ideally, I'd rather have the ability to watch them on the go but if that's not an option then it's not an option.

The app 1080 Play can play 1080p MKV videos without conversion, uses hardware acceleration so its pretty smooth and doesnt kill the battery.

GoodReader? Nope, it doesn't even recognize it, let alone ply it back using hardware acceleration.

If you do want to play back MKV using hardware acceleration, your best choice, currently, is AVPlayerHD. Read http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/great-video-player-avplayerhd-receives-hardwar e-mkv-avi-video-playback-support for more info.
