Processor upgrade 1.1 macpro. is it worth it?

I know what you mean, but I believe it is going to end up being true. I'm meeting the guy this weekend; on Sunday if all goes according to plan.

I will post pictures of the processors and their newness, and hopefully will come back with some great installation news by the end of the weekend!

In my opinion, not worth it given that the 2008 mac pro would still run circles around 2006 and 2009 or 2010. Unless you get the processors dirt cheap, I wouldn't bother.

With a 92% performance increase of course it is worth it.

If you don't plan on upgrading to another model, then it does make sense in the long run. Me personally, I wouldn't have bothered since the 09 and 10 and also 08 models are worth it and the fact that the 08,09,10 models support EFI64 capability which not only is the future of where mac os x is going, but also technology in general. On the 2006 mac pro even with a processor upgrade, you won't be able to run K64 in Snow Leopard or Lion as the firmware is restricted to EFI32. For now, AMD's graphics cards use EBC firmware versus EFI64 firmware as this allows them to work in the 06.07 mac pro.

Again, if 64 bit windows 7 and K64 in snow or lion doesn't make a difference to you, then by all means go ahead with the upgrade of the processors. Just remember though the processors won;t change the efi firmware to support 64-bit kernel of snow or lion, and windows 7.

Hi all, been a while since my last reply here. Wanted to be sure I had things sorted before replying. For those like me who have upgraded to 5356 processors and are (or even if you aren't) having issues with KPs I seem to have fixed my problems by using an altered version of Apple's 2,1 firmware from the Netkas foums. I won't link to it here because I'm sure that's likely to cause issues, but it's easy to find once your a registered member. I can't personally confirm that this works for other processors, though I have read others having the same successes I have experienced. Must say it's so nice to finally have my MP back in a healthy state. Now my processor upgrade is finally complete and stable, this machine really cranks along. Assuming you can get your hands on the parts required at a sensible price, this upgrade is well worth while. Next for me is upgrading to Lion, new video card, SSD in CD bay, and I should be good for another couple of years if required.

I installed x5365 processors in my Mac Pro.

If I stayed at 10.6.7; no problems.

If I installed 10.6.8 or 10.7.x; I got KPs.

I applied the altered 2,1 Firmware and it fixed the issues I was having with my Mac Pro 1,1.

I have been running 10.7.1 with all updates applied and have had no issues.

As far as the debate whether it makes sense to upgrade a Mac Pro 1,1 with faster processors...in my case I feel it did. I bought a my x5365s off ebay for $400/pair. I can get at least another 18-24 months out of this Mac Pro.

When installed the X5355's, did the netkas thing and the Mac Pro 2.1 upgrade. Never had any problems with KPs (touches wood). The only thing I have noticed is that twice in the last six months, the CPU and Exhaust fans have raced on boot and continue to do so.

Fix was power down, unplug from mains for a minute or two to rest the SMC, power and boot, all then is back to normal.

Wonder if this comes about when upgrading to Mac Pro 2.1, the SMC firmware is not updated also and remains impossible to update. Currently boot rom version reads MP21.007F.B06 and SMC version 1.7f10.

I have been running several months now with my 3.0 Quads and updated firmware. But I did one KP a couple of weeks ago, while trying to print out several large PDF files all stacked together in the queue. But I was using Acrobat 8.3.1 instead of the newest Reader, so that may have been it.

Either way, I am not worried about it. No fan issues or anything else.

Running 10.6.8, haven't seen the need for Lion.....

Running 10.7.3 Server here with new 3GHz quad-cores but the AboutThisMac app is from 2008 and I guess it doesn't know from Lion or these chips.

I think there is a third-party utility called "about this Mac" that "fixes" the problem.

I tried it and it didn't. Maybe once it might have, but not with 10.7.3

Go way back in this thread--harryb's suggestion with the injector works for me, on 10.7.3.

This is the same Harry but for some reason Apple ID would not recognise my former identity including d.o.b. so had to come up with new identity.

Let put it this way theres a differance between core temps and Heat sink temps.

My heat sink temps are :

CPU Core 1: 51℃

CPU Core 2: 49℃

CPU Core 3: 50℃

CPU Core 4: 50℃

CPU Core 5: 43℃

CPU Core 6: 45℃

CPU Core 7: 39℃

CPU Core 8: 43℃

Memory Module B3: 53℃

Memory Module B4: 50℃

CPU A Heatsink: 33℃

CPU B Heatsink: 37℃

So be carefull which readings your getting. I have 2*5355 @ 2.66Ghz
