Help! Problems with both Canon MF4400 and MX860!

Hi all,

I'm trying in vain to have a nice clean setup with both these printers, however they're both providing problems.

I have a TP-Link N300 modem/router, and I want to plug both printers in via ethernet so that they are shared throughout the network.

Problems:
Canon ImageClass MF4400 shows as connected to the router, but I cannot for the life of me find drivers for it. Mac OS X won't connect to it; I have all drivers installed that came on the disk and frequently update them.

Canon Pixma MX860 doesn't show as connected. I have drivers so that isn't an issue, but the port's light on the router isn't showing up. I've gone into the printer's LAN settings area and tried to activate the wired LAN (and wireless for that matter). Nothing works!!

Really driving me crazy - help is greatly appreciated!

All sorts, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

With regards to the MF4400 series, the OS X UFR2 driver does have issues with routers and USB connections. But it should be okay with the printer connected via Ethernet to the router, albeit Bonjour may not be routing correctly through the TP-Link thus stopping the printer from appearing in the Default Add Printer view. But if you know the IP address of the MF4400 then you can add the printer using IP > LPD for the protocol. This will then require you to enter the IP address of the MF4400 and no queue name. Then in the Print Using menu you can search for the MF4400 UFRII driver.

As for the MX860, if the Ethernet port on the router is not showing an active connection then the printers port could have a fault. You mention the LAN setting in the machine. Note that only one can be active at a time, wired or wireless. So go back into this menu and ensure that wired is selected.

A quick test of the wired connection would be to connect the Ethernet port of the MX860 directly to the Mac's Ethernet port (you may have to activate manual addressing if you have dynamic addressing enabled). With an IP address set in both devices you should be able to ping (using Network Utility) the MX860 from the Mac and if this works then you can add the printer queue using the Default browser view. Note that the MX860 will appear first as a scanner and then seconds later as the printer, showing canonijnetwork in the Kind column. If you cannot ping the printer with a direct Ethernet connection then try turning it off, unplugging the power cord for a minute and then reconnecting to see if that helps.

There is no Gutenprint or PrintFab driver for the MF series. They are UFR2 devices and it is a Canon proprietary protocol so you will have to use this driver on the Mac. But using Robert's workaround you can use the UFR2 driver, I've done it with XP but I have not tried it on Win7. Have you enabled the LPD Print Service in Win7?

I am having trouble getting Roberts method to work on Win7. Win7 has diabled a lot of Administrator priviledges. I managed to add a Redirect port using Administrator tools > Print Management and added a Ghostscript printer. But when I try to print a test page, nothing happens. I think Win7 by default does not allow gsprint to run automatically. I think I need to change some security permissions here. Please let me know if you have had a chance to try this on Win7 and if it works.

Ok... finally got it to work. Apparently, there was no problem with gsprint or redmon ... It was infact because of the virtual printer driver I was choosing to print on Canon MF4450 . After a lot of tries, got Samsung CLP-660 Series driver (available on both Windows 7 and Mac) to work. This really is a tricky workaround ..... so long as it's working its fine...

The workaround was slow on Win XP, although never remember it being 5 minutes before a response.

I woud question using the Samsung driver on both computers. The idea is that you send Postscript data from the Mac and then that is converted on Windows to the printer language supported by the printer. So that would mean using say the Generic Postscript printer on the Mac and the UFR2 driver on Windows.

I tried installting the UFR2 driver on the Windows virtual printer using the redirect port (redirecting via ghostprint to the hard wired Canon MF4450 UFR2 printer). The virtual printer on windows fails to print even when print command is given from windows directly. It although does print if I change its driver to something else (the samsung one I mentioned earlier for ex.)

Any ideas?

I have Canon MF-4450 installed on Windows 7 via USB and was trying to use it as a network printer from Mac OS X 10.8.2.

Finally I was able to configure correctly and would like to share here. All I did was:

If you do not specify the queue name nor wrong printer name, it does not work (at least for me)

Cheers,
