iPhone won't sync after water damage

Hi all —

My iPhone 3G was accidentally dropped in some water but somehow survived inasmuch as when it's plugged into my iMac the connect to iTunes graphic comes up on the iPhone screen. A message pops up which says the iPhone needs to be restored. After attempting to restore it seems to fail and the same message appears again. Can anyone help?
