Non-HP Printers with AirPrint

Is/did Apple going to offer printers not manufactured by HP for AirPrint support? It's really limiting how AirPrint can only be used with HP printers. There are lots of other great printers out there to use.

iMac 27" Core i5 Mid-2010 Model, Mac OS X (10.6.7), iPhone 4 16GB Black, iPad 1 16 GB

It's my impression that that's entirely up to the printer manufacturers. Presumably Apple has released the relevant specs, so it's up to the printer people to make a compatible model.
