Apple tv wont play tv shows or movies

My apple tv 2 won't play shows or movies that I have put on my iPad ( transferred from my mac). I have setup a local network not connected to the internet as I just want to stream movies from my
iPad. It AirPlay photos and podcasts and movies I have taken on my iPhone but not movies or tv shows. Is this a tv or apple tv issue?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

Are these movies/shows purchased from iTunes? If not then I would make sure they are in a compatible format

As I said they are purchased from iTunes . Plus I can play the movies and shows on the iPad . Also, if use a dock connecter cable from the iPad to the TV it works the movie plays on the TV.

You actually didn't say they were purchased from iTunes, simply that they were transferred from your Mac. I have come across a lot of posters who have original or ripped content that is in iTunes but won't play on ATV and it comes down to the fact that it wasn't compatible.

It's helpful to know all the details up front.
Have you tried rebooting or restoring?

I have solved it. The Apple TV 2 needed to be signed into iTunes in the settings tab. It will then play bought content from the IPad. If you have rentals on the iPad the apple tv must linked to iTunes . This I did by tethering the iPhone with Apple TV 2. That I thought was really cool

My apple tv just stopped playing all my movies and netflix shows....just sits there and has the loading ring going around and around
