Thumbnail Previews not showing up

When I relocated my Masters, there are some images that don't show the preview of the thumbnail. I don't understand why this is and I would like to correct it so that I can see the preview when browsing the images in the finder. I have tried consolidating the images into the Aperture Library and regenerating the previews and then relocating, etc, but have had no luck.

Any ideas on how I can get the images that don't show previews to show them instead of the generic JPEG Preview image?

Thanks,

Mac

Hi Mac.

The first thing I'd check is that you haven't specified something like "don't make Previews" for the Project(s). The [Previews page in the User Manual|http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter =6%26section=15%26tasks=true] is thorough -- read through it and see if anything jumps out at you.

A couple of things you say, though, leave me confused.

- What distinction are you making between "thumbnail" and "Preview"? +("there are some images that don't show the preview of the thumbnail")+ I'm pretty sure in Aperture 3 there are only Previews -- there are no thumbnails (or the Preview is the thumbnail).

- Are you talking about the thumbnails in the OS X Finder? +("to correct it so that I can see the preview when browsing the images in the finder")+ The Finder decodes image files on its own. It does not -- to the best of my knowledge -- use any hitch-along files in Aperture.

- What distinction are you making between Previews and "the generic JPEG Preview image"? +("how I can get the images that don't show previews to show them instead of the generic JPEG Preview image?")+ This I can't parse in any way -- sorry -- I may be having a day of thickness.

Kirby,

My apologies for interchanging "Thumbnail" and "Preivew." I wasn't sure which to call it, so I referenced both terms. I am talking about the thumbnails in the OSX Finder. I want to be able to see the image in the Finder, but some images don't show up. The file is there, but it shows as the generic JPEG icon instead of the image.

I do generate Previews for all images in all projects, so I can rule that out. Any ideas on what is going on or how to fix?

First forget about the Aperture previews or settings. Seeing the file image in icon view in the finder has nothing to do with Aperture.

Now is this happening that some folders show the image and some folders do not. Or is it happening in a folder where some images are shown and some (in the same folder) show the generic icon?

If it's the first then check that you have *show icon preview* set in the view options for that folder.

Frank,

Unfortunately it's the latter and not the former. I tried what you mentioned anyway just to check to see what happened and when I uncheck the *show icon preview* in the view options for that folder, the icons where the preview is visible are slightly different than the ones that weren't visible. Only 3 out of around 40 images aren't visible. The difference is that the ones that were visible have a black outline and the ones that weren't visible remain as they were and have no black outline. They are just a static icon image.

Any ideas? I'd like to be able to view the preview of all of my images in the Finder.

Frank,

It's the strangest thing. Those pesky images don't show up, no matter which view I choose. They won't show up in icon, list, column or cover flow. Oddly, I just learned (unless there is some issue with my computer) that when you change the Text Size in the finder view options, it alters whether or not you can see the thumbnail image previews. If I shift down to 10, none of the image previews show up. As I increase it, more and more of them do. However, the ones in question, don't show up no matter what size I choose.

Frank,

There is no difference between the ones that do show up and the ones that don't. We are talking about JPEG image files here. (My relocated Aperture Master images). In all of the views, previews of the thumbs are present except for the few in question. However, when I click on Quick Look, the image does show (thankfully. I was worried that upon quick look, the image of the generic icon would pop out).

You can try moving the finder preferences file to the desktop and re-launching Finder.

In ~/Library/Preferences look for com.apple.finder.plist move that to the desktop. Then go to *Force Quit* select Finder and press Relaunch.

If that doesn't do it, you might get better responses if you post to the *Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard* forum. There is a subgroup for the Dock and Finder.

Frank,

Thanks for the time and effort. You are an ace and very generous with your time as always. I will head over to the other forum before I start messing around with anything. All in all it really isn't that big a deal so long as my image is not corrupt. Yes, I'd like to see the preview while scrolling, but I could live with it if I had to.

As long as it isn't an Aperture related issue, then I will just move on.

Have a great one,

Mac

Kirby,

As you suggested, I opened in Preview and Saved As (a different name) to the same location. It does excise the anomaly. That said, I don't want to have to do that for all of the images that are doing this. As I look through more folders, I am noticing more images that have the anomaly. Even though it still isn't a lot of files, I did notice that about half the images in one particular folder have the anomaly (if that is what we are calling it).

Also, these are my Master images we are talking about. I really don't want to be opening them and saving them as (further) compressed JPEGs (even at the highest setting) as this is sure to cause image loss. I'd prefer to correct the issue at the root of the problem (if there is one).
