Straighten tool also crops?

I have noticed that when I straighten a photo in edit mode in iPhoto, the image also crops. The more the angle of tilt, the more of the photo I lose at the edges. It appears to be zooming in as it straightens. Is this normal?

That is correct - it is normal and necessary - if it did not then you would have little weird white triangles along the edges when you straightened the photo

Is there an alternative so it doesn't crop? I have a newspaper article I am trying to straighten but it is cropping out the words.

Add a border before straightening. You can simply print the photo to PDF, import the PDF, the straighten the imported pdf photo and crop it to the section you want.
