iPhone - Backing up to a new computer - What is backed up?

Ok, so here is the deal..
I recently purchased myself a MacBook Pro, and sold my Computer which was authorised to my iPhone.
Stupidly, I did not make a copy of the iPhone back up or iTunes Library so that I could just link it to the MacBook, and iTunes would not have suspected a thing.
My problem is, I want to update the iOS from 4.2.1 to 4.3.1, and update the music library on my iPhone, but I have been putting it off for so long, as I think backing up and restoring on a new computer means losing all of my personal information.

My question, therefore, is:
*+If I connect my iPhone to a NEW computer, and hit the 'Back Up' button... what exactly is backed up?+*

(of course, I already know that I am going to lose all the pictures, music and applications.. I have copies of them, my main concern is SMS history and Contacts)

Okay.

I can see what is backed up.. It's pretty hard to miss that giant list..
But the question was directly related at the back up content, executed by ANOTHER computer.

Let's simplify the question, shall we...
Yes, or no.
I can go to ANY computer, and the moment I press 'back up', the entirety of that list is backed up.

Cheers!
