Hello,
The short answer is yes. BUT! If you don't upgrade your ram or hard drive you will probably have some problems. I just finished upgrading my Clamshell. I added a 512mb stick of ram ($150) and a 40GB hard drive ($130). At my local Mac computer store I purchased another copy of Tiger ($140) and had them install it on the hard drive before I put it in ( Otherwise you would have to use XpostFacto to install it). I followed the instructions on www.pbfixit.com for disassembly of the iBook and all went without a hitch. Good instructions.
So, for $420 I have breathed a little more life into this old Mac. Some would say just buy new or newer. New cost considerably more and newer only means you don't know what it has been through. I like my clamshell. It has class.

I see them instructions at pbfixit.....i was thinking of upgrading the HD....i have a spare 10 and 40 gig 2.5 inch drives.
How was that?.....not to difficult?....I see the instructions look pretty clear....i am tempted to upgrade my HD.

I have tried to find one of them torx#8 screwdrivers in my area but i cannot find a #8...will probably have to order one online.

one other question....my other 2 HD are formated at fat32...will i be able to format that to the mac file system booting from the mac OS cd's?
thanks Leo

Well it's not as easy as doing a desktop's hard disk, but if you follow a take-apart guide closely and do everything methodically it's not too difficult. I have to admit that it took me three goes to close it all up with all screws used and no odd lumps or bumps (but the machine is still working great 1 year from upgrade) but I did get there. Disk Utility on the OS boot CDs will allow you to format the replacement drives to HFS+.

Hey Leo,
The instructions were good. I opened the website on my desktop and did all the work in front of the screen. The 40Gb would be better(you don't want to do this on a regular basis). Doing it your way (formatting after installation) means you will have to boot from a Mac OS CD or maybe TechTool Pro. Do you have Tiger on CD's? I don't know if Tiger will recognize the pc formatted hd and allow you to reconfigure it. I do know that last week I upgraded my iMac with a brand new hd (not initialized) and Tiger didn't see it. So I booted from OS9 and used the drive setup utility to initialize it. Tiger then loaded. I don't have a torx 8 either. The right size electronics screw driver will work (it did for me) because the screws weren't very tight. Finally, I'm responding to you on my Clamshell, wirelessly, with Tiger on a 40Gb and a 512mb ram stick installed. It seems to be working fine for me. Good luck.

Well, I did it....i swapped out my 6 gig HD to a 40 gig HD.
I put it all back together the first time, and thought i ruined it..screen was all crazy looking and strange colors.

I went to sleep depressed thinking i killed it...woke up the next morning and disassembled and reassembled the whole thing again and success!

I think it might have been one of 2 things....LCD cable pinched or modem not seated on the bottom properly....anyway have OS 9 and 10.1 reinstalled on it.
Now that i have so much room....i think i will get a version of 10.3 and install it....maybe an airport card off ebay too.

The cheapest i could see a copy of 10.3 on "cd" was 79 dollars.
Anyway thanks to everyone for the tips and support!
