Time Machine error: The problem may be temporary. Try again later...

I am having the error: "The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk" with TIme Machine. I've read all the forums and tried all the suggestions. I do not have "Time Capsule". I am backing up to a Lacie 250 G external drive. I've already reformatted the drive- erased the drive several times and started over. I've tossed the back up file "..processing" as suggested. Every time I run the Disk Utility it tells me nothing is wrong with the drive. The back up will get so far and quit giving me the afore mentioned error. I use Onyx10 to make sure there is nothing wrong with the computer Hard Drive. I'm running on a Mac Mini Duo Core, 2GB memory (if that matters). I'm getting really close to giving up on Time Machine and backing up manually.
Any ideas?

Most likely, you have a corrupted file that Time Machine is choking on.

See #C3 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

Thank you for your response. I went to the link and found the "Widget" for Time Machine. That was the best help ever- it told me exactly what file, and where the file was that Time Machine was "choking on". I covered all my bases though, my back up drive was ancient, so I replaced it with a new drive and proceeded to start totally over. It "choked" again. Apparently there was a file in my Downloads folder that was the trouble. I sent everything to the trash in the downloads folder, and then I couldn't delete the trash. So I went on another forum that reminded me about the Option- Delete trash. So I did that and started over, and now the Time Machine works! Thank you for everyone that helped!
