Formatting External Harddisk

I have recently bought a new Ext HDD and I have some other flash drives.
I would want to use my HDD in journaled file system so that it could store and transfer large files with size more than 4GB because I've just learnt that with FAT file system I cannot transfer a file of size 4GB or larger from the mac to the HDD...T_T

My question is if I format my HDD as Journaled File system would it be able to transfer files from FAT file system from PC? or it must be used with Mac only? and is it possible for FAT to transfer files to Journaled?

Thank you

MacBook Pro 15-inch, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

The Mac Journaled file system is just a file system on the disk. You can copy files onto it or off from it provided your computer can read from or write to the files system. Without a third party driver, Windows can not read or write an HFS+ formatted file system (ht Mac Journaled file system). MacOS can read a windows NTFS formatted partition but without a third party driver is unable to write to it. Both MacOS and Windows can read/write FAT partitions.

Both Paragon and MediaFour sell commercial drivers for your Windows computer to be able to read/write an HFS+ formatted partition. Paragon also sells a commercial driver for your MacOS to be able to write on NTFS formatted partitions, not to mention the free options available as well.
