Mail Prog will not open ...says home directory is full

mail program wont open , says mail cannot update your mailboxes because your home directory is full.. Ive 87 gig of space , Ive cleaned a heap off and ran disc utility repair permissions , retsrated , but it just dont wanna open.. does anybody have any clues here please ..many thanks Snog O
