Is the ipad 2 3g locked or not??????

Unlocked... You only need to get a new sim card from the carrier in Germany. The sim card you get here in the US is an AT&T sim card. The sim card will only work with AT&T and that is probably why you were told that the iPad was locked. The iPad is unlocked...

Same with Verizon, unlocked. You better find out what iPad you will need in Germany, AT&T or Verizon. More than likely you will need the AT&T version. Best bet is to check with the carrier you will use in Germany.

The Verizon version will not work in Germany. It uses CDMA, not GSM. To the best of my knowledge, about the only country in Europe that uses CDMA is Ukraine.

If you don't believe what you are being told here, don't buy the iPad. We are users and many are posting from experience. Your statement "...When I buy it and it doesn't work with a German sim what can I do?" indicates that you are unsure whether to believe it will work or not. There is nothing you can do except return the iPad where you bought it.

I suggest you wait until someone else you know in Germany buys one. Then you can see if it works or not. You appear to not believe what you are being told here.

I also suggest you search these forums where you'll find 10s if not hundreds of posts where people have bought AT&T iPads for use in other countries that use GSM.

You must buy the AT&T version, because that one is using GSM like they use in Germany (Europe) and has no sim-lock.
Then You can buy in Germany a sim card from T-Mobile or Vodafone.
Many people import an AT&T iPad to Europe 😉

You can come back and beat up David Brewer if it doesn't work.

Of course you could also check with whichever German cell data provider and ask if they have a microSIM compatible with the iPad 2 WiFi+3G GSM. Rest assured there is no lock on the US AT&T model.

Question : I've ordered a ipad2 , which will be reaching by apr 28. I need to travel back to india after 1 month. Do i need to activate it now in AT&T or i can directly activate that with india carriers??

Your choice, if you want to use it in the states you can activate it then cancel the plan (assuming you are talking about activating the 3G account, not the entire iPad 2), or you can wait.

So i can activate a 3G plan via AT&T ,use the ipad till i'm here in US. Before i go back i'll cancel the 3g plan and take a new plan in my home country.

BTW Is there difference between activating the 3G plan and activating the IPAD.

as i'm new to apple,please bear with my silly questions....

Yes, there is a difference between activating the iPad and activating your 3G account.

To activate your iPad 2 and have it do anything you will need to either activate it at the place you buy it or, if you have a laptop with you and internet access, do it yourself. After that you can activate your 3G account (you will need a credit card with a US address, and a "home" US address, your hotel will work as well as a prepaid credit card) and cancel it when you are heading back home. Be sure to do so as it auto renews.
