Hello.
SO my old computer had a severe harddrive crash, and it was unrecoverable (went to many different places) so I had to erase everythign from my computer, reformat, and start fresh.
Now this is my issue. I know that I can get the music off of my ipod to my computer through software such as itunes backwards.
But what about my iphone? If I plug in my iphone into my newly formated computer, I don't want to lose my contacts...applications...pictures....calendar events. How can I ensure this will not happen and sync the contacts/calendar form my iphone to my new computer?
please let me know, im not too tech saavy so use technical terms sparingly haha.
Well, the RIGHT way to do it is to restore the backup you made of your old computer before it crashed to your new computer. Ideally the full backup of your valuable data, including iTunes, but at the least the iTunes backup that iTunes prompts you to do on a regular basis.
If you don't have a backup, before you do another thing go out and buy a backup drive and software so you will not be stuck like this again. Or sign up for an Internet backup service such as LiveDrive.
The iPhone/iTunes sync is one way only, iTunes to iPhone. If you sync your phone it will erase all of your iTunes content. However, you can transfer PURCHASED tracks and apps from your phone to your computer. First authorize the new computer to the same iTunes account that is on your iPhone. Connect the phone but do not sync. Select "Transfer Purchases" from the File menu. After doing this you can safely sync iTunes content including tracks and apps.
For contacts and calendar go to the Info tab on the iPhone screen in iTunes and select a Windows app to sync each of them to. Then create at least one entry in each Windows app. When you sync you will be prompted to merge, and you won't lose anything.
Pictures you are stuck. If they are in the Camera Roll you can transfer them to your computer with whatever app you use to get photos off a digital camera. For the photo gallery, however, you will lose the pictures (almost).
For photos and ripped tracks there are apps that will let you see the files on your iPhone from your computer, and transfer them to the computer. This will work for ripped tracks and photos, but keep in mind that the photos on the iPhone are lower resolution than the originals, so you will not be able to regain the quality of the originals. As these apps are not officially approved by Apple you will have to use Google to find them.
