Brother 8080DN Error MTW005 and CC031

Hi,

I am having the oddest issue with the network scanning on my Brother 8080DN. When I click scan (primarily scan to e-mail) from my Brother Control Center on my computer, the scanner works fine. However, when I go to the actual printer/scanner and attempt to scan the printer does not scan, but these error messages come up on my computer:

"Failed to connect to device... MTW005" and "Scanning Failed... CC031"

This is an issue because the scanner (which is networked to several computers) is not in the same room as my computer, so I have to run back and forth between rooms in order to scan multiple documents.

What is puzzling me is that the scanning works when I initiate the scan from the computer (so obviously the scanner is networked to the computer), but not the other way around.

I tried installing updated drivers and reinstalling all Brother software on the computer and neither has worked.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Found the solution here:

http://support.brother.com/g/b/faqend.aspx?c=au&lang=en&prod=mfcj5910dw_all&faqi d=faq00002585_000 .

  1. 1. Open your Control Center icon.
  2. 2. In the printer model number drop down box, select “Other”.
  3. 3. The Device Selector box pops up, and you should see your printer model listed here.
  4. 4. In the status area:
    1. a. If it says “Offline”, then click the “-“ sign to remove it.
    2. b. If it says “Idle”, then this solution is not your problem.
  5. 5. Click the “+” sign to add back in the printer and select your model from the list.
  6. 6. Now the status should say “Idle”.
  7. 7. Click “Okay” and you’re done.

Worked perfectly for me to get the scanner back online.

Brother errors MTW005 and CC031, kind of an old thread, but for me it´s an actual problem.

None of the "solutions" worked for me, but I fixed my problem anyway:

In the OSX network-settings, ethernet and wireless were enabled at the same time, both getting a different IP-adress.

This seemed to irritate the brother control center. After disabling one of them the scan-button works like a charm again!

I may have a solution. I was receiving the same errors on my MacPro (OS X 10.6.8) when scanning from a Brother MFC-8480DN. Whether the scans were initiated on the MacPro or at the printer/scanner, they were only successful, at best, 10% of the time. The rest of the time the scan would stall at various states of completion and present the error messages noted by TAG EMP above. I discovered that the setting in the "Ethernet" submenu (in the "Network" menu) at the printer's LCD window was "100B-FD" (which I assume means: 100mbps, Full Duplex). Even though all of my network components, as well as most of the devices connected to it, are 10/100/1Gbps compatible (including the router that both the MacPro and scanner are connected to), I changed the setting to "AUTO". This completely fixed the problem!

Hope this helps!

HOLY COW.... OMG!!! BRILLIANT!!! Kudos SDWitness!!!!

I have spent hours trying to figure this stupid brother device out ("Failed to connect to device... MTW005" and "Scanning Failed... CC031") when trying to scan from device to mac.

Updated firmware, delete all traces of drivers, reinstalled....etc...etc...

Saw that Ethernet setting and thought... not the issue as mine WAS set to "AUTO" but was reporting "100B-FD".

I flipped it to "10B-FD" and.... VOILA!!!

This discussion needs to get flagged big time for any and all folks looking for the fix for this crazy issue with these Brother MFC devices.

My device is a Brother MFC-9340CDW. But from the massive amounts of posts on the inter webs...everyone is having this problem as far back as 2004. I know it applies to all Brother multi function devices. (sorry to be spelling so much out...just trying to get as much metadata in here - I picked this up from google, so hopefully others come across it).

I have a simular problem. But my printer (Brother MFC-J6920DW) is connected wirelessly. Changing the wired ethernet connection settings doesn't seam to resolve the issue (it would be really weird if should).

I only get the error message after the first scan. It doesn't matter if its a scan to file that has een initiated from the printer of from the computer. A reboot of the printer solves the issue most of the time. But still, it is annoying and time consuming when several documents have to be scanned.

Additional info:

  • Scanning to web services like dropbox or google drive is not a problem.
  • Pinging the printer does work fine

My devices:

  • Mac mini (late 2012) with OSX 10.10.2 (Yousemite)
  • Brother MFC-J6920DW (latest firmware update version of late 2014)
  • Router with build in WiFi & ethernet switch (or hub). Docsis 3.0 (provider: Telenet)

My network configuration

  • Mac mini wired connection with the router
  • Brother MFC-J6920DW connected wirelessly with fixed IP to router
  • No firewall on Mac Mini

Anybody an idea on how to solve this?

Thanks SDWitness and jwlehman. I had the same issue. Neither my Mac nor the Brother DCP-L2540DW are connected via Ethernet. However, I changed that Ethernet setting to 10B-FD and everything is working again for me. It is strange that I change a wired setting to fix wireless connection issue, but nothing else was changed and it immediately worked.

Well done folks!

You are my hero! We had a ticket open on our helpdesk for 2 months, and after trying everything else, I found this article and thought I'd give it ago.

The Printer part installed but we just couldn't get the scanner bit to work.

This was a Brother dcp L8400cdn and the wired network interface was set to Auto, I changed it to 100Meg baseT Full Duplex and hey presto I could see the scaner through the brother software.

Thanks.

I am having the same issue with a Brother DCP-L2540DW. I have changed the network-ethernet settings to every possible option and none work. The printer prints fine and will scan ONCE after turning it off/on. Looking at the device in Apple System Preferences, the printer is online and ready, but a connection cannot be established to the scanner. Does anyone know anything else to help?
