iChat and Yahoo Messenger

Hi,

Is it possible to use Yahoo Messenger in iChat? I've read that Jabber is needed. I already downloaded it and can somebody tell me what server to use in order to get Yahoo Transport. and once account is created, how can I get my yahoo contacts to ichat automatically?

Thanks.

I was able to get this to work already however my profile picture seems not to change. As far as I know, there is a bug in changing profile pics in yahoo messenger. In iChat, i have assigned a different profile pic however it still shows my profile pic in yahoo.

any tips on how to change the picture? will the picture be dependent on yahoo even though I have changed picture in iChat?

thanks.

Hi,

I presumed that you did this
http://allforces.com/2005/05/06/ichat-to-msn-through-jabber/

The Instructions say MSN and lead you through selecting a MSN transport but they can be used for a Yahoo transport.

They use a Third party Jabber IM App called Psi.
This then links your Yahoo Account with the Jabber account you have and then you can add buddies via the Transport.

There then some potential blocks you may have to look in to:-
Does the Psi App pick up your Yahoo Buddy pic ?
If it does not then it is unlikely iChat will when you add the Jabber account there.

iChat will tend to default to the Buddy pic you use with other Buddy lists
This can be whatever you set in iChat.
If you set Nothing it will send the default icon of the type of account it is. (Jabber is a Lightbulb)
If it does not use that it will use your Account Pic in System Preferences > Accounts or your Pic in the Address Book.

If it this pic you are seeing (iChat's Buddy Pic) but your Buddies are still seeing your default Yahoo Account one then you have to check if that is allowed through the Transport.

That may take a few more checks with Psi - like setting it to use your Address Book Pic or the iChat one (Home Folder/Library/Images/Recent Pictures )

This is what jabber told me:

Hi,

I would like to ask if it is possible to change my profile pic while logged in using iChat with Yahoo Messenger. My yahoo profile pic is still the one showing in my iCaht even if I had changed the pic in preferences.

do you have any idea on how to do it?

Do i have to post pic in jabber settings for me to change my pic in iChat?

Because Yahoo uses their own proprietary protocol, I think this is not possible."

Hi,

If it is going to work then you will have to change the Buddy Pic you have for your Jabber Buddy List.

I have used the All Forces instructions to set up a MSN Transport and I get Buddy pics from those MSN Buddies.

I presume they see mine.

Hi,

If you are having trouble finding a Jabber Server that does a Yahoo transport check this List

This shows Off Line servers in pink bands.

Others should be On Line.

The Services such as Transports are indicated by little ICons.

A Coloured icon means that you can access it from another (Any) Jabber Login.

A Greyed out one means you have to login to that specific Jabber server.

The first means that although you have to Register with the Jabber server anyway you can still add the Buddies to a GoogleTalk Buddy list for example and only use that in iChat if you desire.

Other than checking the account/ID now and then you don't have to use the Jabber ID you have created at all.
