iMac - 10.6.7 - Freezing with video glitch "You must restart your computer"

Good afternoon -

I've been having issues with my iMac for a number of months now. It seems that everytime I update the OS X past 10.6.3, I routinely end up with a frozen computer. The freezes would occur during playing WoW, browsing Safari and/or working with iPhoto. After each update and repeated freezes, I would just resort to resetting the OS X to 10.6.3 and I'd never see it freeze.

So 10.6.7 has come along and I'm giving it another shot. Today, when waking the computer, a message appeared on the screen (in front of a distorted desktop of black and white bars) indicated that I needed to Restart my computer by holding down the power button and then powering back up. This was a first for me.

When the option came up to report the issue to Apple, I copied it and am pasting it below.

Can anyone provide some suggestions, or should I just go back to 10.6.3 like usual? I'd really like to stick with the latest version for no other reason than to mess around with the App Store.

Thanks!

What you experienced is called a kernel panic; they are sometimes caused by defective RAM, but may also have other causes - here is some general info for you to start with:

http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html

There is obviously some sort of problem if you can't update your system. Have you followed the generally suggested update procedure:

Backup your hard drive
disconnect all external peripherals except keyboard and mouse
repair Permissions
update using the combo updater from the Apple download site (not Software Update)
repair permissions

And have you checked your RAM? (System Profiler > memory) and/or run the Apple hardware test using your install disk?

Thanks much for your reply.

I followed your steps, removing my external hard drive (only additional peripheral), repairing permissions, installing combo updater and repairing permissions again. I tested my RAM and Video RAM using TechTool Deluxe and it checked out OK.

Now the waiting game begins. Hopefully my freezing days are over.

I'll be in touch and thanks again!

Unfortunately, it looks like I'm back to square one again. I experienced a freeze of the system and noticed that it occurred while my external hard drive was backing up via Time Machine. With that in mind, I disconnected the hard drive and did not have a freeze for a couple of days during which, admittedly, I did not use the computer much.

SInce then, I have experienced "graphical and interface" freezes while using Skype, iChat and watching video content on Safari. I refer to it as "graphical and interface" because the whole computer does not freeze. For example, during a Skype or iChat conversation, the screen will lock up or go black, but we will still be able to hear the person in the call, and they can continue to hear us. At the same time, we cannot interface with the computer at all, via the keyboard or mouse. It is completely unresponsive to these.

I don't have any confirmed proof of this, but I seriously think something has changed since the post 10.6.3 patch. I don't know if my video card is incompatible with 10.6.4 through 10.6.7, but anytime I reset back to 10.6.3, I do not experience this type of freeze. Ever.

To say the least I'm frustrated. I've called AppleCare and their response was pretty much, "Well, your computer is 3.5 years old". But that's the reason I buys Macs - because I expect them to run well past the typical timeframe of a PC-based machine.

Oh well - if you have any other ideas, I'd love to try them out. Otherwise, its back to 10.6.3 for me.

Have a great weekend!

iDrifter -

Can you clarify what you mean by "disk maintenance"? Honestly spoken, I've never performed many maintenance based tasks on any of my Macs, short of updating software and backing up to an external hard drive.

As per the suggestion of babowa above, I "repaired permsissions" using Disk Utility, but that's the extent of it.

Thanks!

Ok, so I've successfully run the following test:

1. TechTool Deluxe (running every available option they had)

2. Extended Hardware Test

3. Rember

All three of these tests came back with flying colors suggesting that all systems passed their appropriate evaluation. The only point of interest was that the computer froze up while running the Video RAM component of the TechTool Deluxe scan. I hard reset the computer and when powered back up, successfully ran the whole TechTool Deluxe scan.

Any other suggestions?

I greatly appreciate any and all tips and thanks for the help up to this point.

The only non-Apple kext I'm seeing is com.razer.driver.RazerDeathAdderDriver 2.0.2. You could try Safe Booting -- hold Shift Key at startup -- which should disable third party kexts and see if the KPs stop.

You could also try temporarily removing that kext. Open Terminal and copy/paste (don't type this in.) You will get a warning, if you haven't used sudo before. Then you will be asked for your password. You won't see it on the screen as you type. Then hit enter. (To reverse this, just substitute kextload for kextunload.)

sudo kextunload RazerDeathAdderDriver.kext/

Or, if it has an uninstaller, just uninstall the whole thing and see if the KPs stop. It may not be compatible with 10.6.7.

EDIT: I see Andy just picked up on this one too.
