Macbook Pro 13 (2010) -mini Displayport to HDMI cable - no audio

I have a brand new mini displayport to HDMI cable to connect my macbook pro 13 to my tv (LG). The connection seems to work fine, video is mirrored etc no problem. I cannot however get any sound to play through the TV. I have been through sound settings and HDMI output does not appear in the output list - only "internal speakers - built in) appears.

On the "about this mac" detailed page and on the "audio (built in)" tab on the left, my mac says it has HDMI displayport output.

I have read some reviews on here that say my macbook pro 13 has the capability to output audio through the cable I have.

There must be a solution to this without me having to buy more cables

Can anybody help please????

I think you must have got some misinformation because the Mini Display port is only for display purposes, to get audio you have would have to buy some speakers that connect to your audio jack or an input output cable form your mac to your display

Hi S,

You are correct that your MBP should be able to output both audio and video through the MDP, given the proper adapter. See Apple's KB article on this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241. Also note that there have been a fair number of problems getting these setups to work properly.

I recently tried the same thing and had no luck getting audio without a separate cable.

I now have a problem. After using the headphone jack to my tv for several hours, I now have no audio to my macbook internal speakers.

System Preferences>Sound>Output tab shows only 1 device for sound output; Digital Out. And in the Settings for Selected Device it reads: "The selected device has no output controls"

The volume icon on the menu bar is gray-doesn't work.

Any advice here?

Hi o,

The switch inside the audio jack is likely stuck. Try gently inserting, wiggling, removing the audio plug.

Thanks for the help. I found another solution. I reset the SMC while the headphone cable was still plugged in. It worked fine
