How to disable car autoplay on iPhone

I purchased a new Subaru and every time I start the car my paired iPhone auto-plays music. How do I stop the music from playing automatically?

MacBook, iPhone OS 3.1.2, Car Bluetooth

So. Let us all send feedback. I think if we're paying high priced hardware, we can expect the software to behave correctly and for that matter, Apple, you could and should fix your software before any fancypants new looks, new "features" (like the unusable lables) or whatever - Just make it work flawlessly.

Same issue, both with my Sync-equipped F-150 and whenever I dock it onto my Philips DC290/37.

I disabled the Autoplay feature in Sync and have a different audio source (Sirius) selected, but the iPhone still autoplays whenever I start the truck. If I don't stop it, I end up draining the iPhone battery unsuspectingly.

ANNOYING as HECK!

I had to remove all music from my iPhone in order to prevent any auto play.

Is this an issue with the iPhone itself or with the other devices? Not sure whom or where to direct this BUGS to. It appears this bug has been around since iOS 3!

3GS, iOS 4.3.3

Umm i know its anoying but doesnt it stop playing if you just hit the stop button?

So we're dealing with 2 different situations here?

- A bluetooth pairing with playback?

and

- A usb docking does auto-playback?

Im in the process of conducting tests to find a way to fix the auto-playback, but it will require us to do what apple hates that most people do to our phones 😝

Though im not 100% sure it will work anyway, i just wanted to see if there was an official way but doesnt look like there is

This is one of those threads that has been started so many times in Apple support and I have read through nearly all of them with no help in sight. I especially love the comments from dopey people saying, "Well it works in my car, so you must be doing it wrong." Bottom line: autoplay is definitely a problem. You'd think that with so many different car manufacturers using so many different stereos which all seem to deal with bluetooth autoplay, with differing degrees of ease and success, that just introducing a software switch in the iTunes settings on the iPhone to "disable auto-play" would be the answer.

I travel a lot and rent all kinds of cars, this is a problem with every car I rent, I use the bluetooth audio for GPS and phone calls, it's quite annoying to have the music play every time I start the car. It looks to be more an iphone issue. iPhone 4s iOS7.0.4. Agree with Mattmerk that disable auto play in phone is best answer

I have the same issue. And same car. I just recently switched to iPhone. I had a BB Torch previously and I can tell you it was one of the settings that I changed on the BB to stop the auto play. But there doesn't appear to be a fix for this issue on iPhone. I have read several dozen forums. And it appears to be a glitch in a number of smartphones on the market. I hope the new ios7.1 update fixes the issue. If not my next course of action is to remove all then podcasts and music from my iPhone. And store them on iCloud. Hopefully that fixes the auto play issue.

It won't fix your issue. Music in the cloud still plays automatically. Leave your music where it is.

My solution is to turn off bluetooth and when I want to hear music, turn bluetooth back on. Elegant? No. But until Apple fixes this, or every car stereo manufacturer, it is the only thing I can see working. At least getting to the bluetooth switch is as easy as a swipe-up from the bottom of the screen.

RE: Music starts playing automatically when iPhone connects via Bluetooth in a car.

(In my case, it was always iTunes Radio)

I found a fix that works for my iPhone 5 running the lastest iOS 7.1.1

Go to: Settings > Cellular >

(Scroll Down until you see USE CELLULAR DATA FOR:)

This is a list of all the Apps and Utilities that can use cellular data.

Keep scrolling through these until you see Music and switch it OFF.

If you're like me and only use Bluetooth and iPhone in your car to listen to what you choose, such as Pandora orSpotify, this will work. Both Pandora and Spotify are third party apps that need to be launched to work, unlike the built in Music app that seems to have a mind of it's own.

This is a funny thread! I actually won't buy a car that WON'T automatically autoplay my music on my phone! I want that feature all the time! 🙂 But we all have different likes and dislikes, right? Anyway, I rent cars almost every week, and here is what I can tell you about autoplay and bluetooth. When a car says it has bluetooth for your phone... there is a huge spectrum of what that actually means. Here are the seven levels of "bluetooth support" I have personally seen in cars:

1. Some cars can't play music at all, they only do the phone. I call this "ghetto bluetooth". The infinity G37 convertible does this in 2009, but 2010 and beyond, they can now do music.

2. Some cars can do music, but not control it in any way. You have to do all of that via the phone. Poor.

3. Some cars can do music and let you start/stop/skip around/shuffle etc. But they can not autoplay on car start up. So people who say "it works fine in my car" may have this level of bluetooth technology, and the car actually can't do more.

4. Some cars can do autoplay, but only of mp3s using the phones player.

5. Some cars can do autoplay, and will even launch your last used app! So if you were listening to Pandora on the way to the store. Get out. Get in. Turn the car on, suddely Pandora resumes!!! This is a huge feature for me. When a car autoplays my mp3s instead, I find that very frustrating.

6. Some cars can show song details such as name and artist.

7. Finally, the state of the art is that they do everything in 5 and 6, but also display cover art for your music as well. That's the most exciting level of technology for me.

So as we look at why your iPhone is autoplaying, or not, the first thing to realize is your car itself is a HUGE variable in what is happening. And many have an autoplay setting in the bluetooth or audio setup.

Question 1: can your car autoplay at all? Maybe not. If it does, is there a setting to stop it if you don't want it?

Next, I have not been in any cars that autoplay my phone when the radio is off or set to a different band such as FM/AM/Satelite/Aux In, etc.

Question 2: If you have the radio off, does the phone still autoplay? If not, your phone is doing well, and it seems the car is sending the autoplay signal.

Question 3: When your car is on a different band other than bluetooth, does the phone still autoplay? If in Q2 or Q3 your phone autoplays, then this is in fact a phone problem. The phone detects bluetooth (probably to connect to phone features even if the radio isn't on or needed) and autoplays itself. But I find this unlikely. I always have my bluetooth on, and I've never witnessed my phone suddenly play music because it connected to a bluetooth source! I wish it would, actually, because there is this sweet 2009 infinity I would buy.

My gut tells me that if the phone is misbehaving, it is a car issue, not a phone issue, but using the above three questions, I could quickly find where the real problem lies.

Question 4: Does your phone autoplay music when connecting to a non-car bluetooth? If not, that is more evidence that it is the car sending an autoplay signal, not the phone. I have a bluetooth headset. If I turn it on, my phone does not suddenly start to play. Nor does it start to play when I connect to my Jabra handsfree speakerphone.

I hope that helps shed some light on the autoplay situation.

SSo, I have an Acura that does the autoplay, sometimes. I don't think it's my car, I think it's the phone - it seems to auto play if my music app is not actively open (it plays from my songs list) and it will play from whatever playlist is open if the app is open and NOT the most recent app open. I read that a hard reset helps, but didn't try it yet. What I did try, and worked on my iPhone 5s (it did this with my 5 also) was to go to setting, control panel and shut off all access, restart phone and turn the access back on. Worked like a charm, for 2 days that's why here searching. I WANT my auto play to work all the time! I live that feature!

my guess is disable access from apps to the control center and it won't auto play? gonna see...
