Time Machine won't back up

Time Machine won't back up

I have recently started using a Western Digital My Passport Essentials for Time Machine, and it has been working fine until now. Whenever a back up starts it will get to 2 or 2.6 MB of about 630 and then nothing. It won't give any errors or quit or any other indication that there is a problem, it just stays there. I have left it to back up for over 12 hours and there is no change in the process, does anyone know what is wrong?

macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.8), on leopard

maybe it's normal?

the files that changed since the previous backup will be backed up, so if nothing was changed, the backup could be small.

It's not that it backs up too fast it's that it says it's backing up indefinitely until it i stop it. It says that it's backing up 2.6 out of 630 MB and then it stays there. It also shows the most recent back up was several days ago when I open time machine.

maybe try different hard drive if possible, to test if the same thing happens or not

I have also realized that when the progress bar stops advancing I can no longer find backup in the activity monitor.
