IS there a difference between Xserve ram and MacPro ram ?

I have a couple of Dual 2.66 GHz Quad Core Intel Xserves which say they have 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC ram installed, and I also have a Single 2.66GHz Quad Core Mac pro which also says it takes the same kind of ram.

Would it be correct in thinking that the ram would be the same ? And should be OK to use in either ...

I have new 4Gig modules for the MP so will have spare 2gig sticks I might put into the Xserve ???

Determining precise models is always a pain with the XServes and the Mac Pros since there are multiple variations of the 'quad core' configurations.

However, from your description it sounds like they're both using the same memory specs, so there shouldn't be any problem moving the memory from one machine to the other.

The biggest test is whether it fits - each generation of memory uses a slightly different edge connector arrangement, designed so that incompatible memory modules can't be inserted into a slot.

Thanks Camelot, Ive had issues this morning with install of additional ram at a site where I have limited access ... so have brought back what I thought was suspect ram, installed in the second Dual 2.66 I have here and it has worked fine.

What I am thinking is that the banks (A1/B1 etc) on the site server were the issue and I have mis-matching ram so need to sort that out first then install new stuff ...

Thanks for your input - always helpful !
