Adding Sustain to Live Playing Without Pedal

can anyone offer a way to keep notes sustained in a live playing situation without using a sustain pedal or caps lock keyboard?

Connect a Doorbel switch to a mono jack lead. Plug it into the sustain port of your midikeyboard, or just use a lead with a jack with stripped wires at the end, every time you hold the stripped wires together you'll get sustain.
Or, assign sustain to your modwheel, or your highest or lowest key. This can be done using a transformer in the environment.

1. Open an Environment window, cmd-8, via the *dropdown menu* top left, go to the *Clicks & Ports* layer.
2. From the New menu, choose Transformer. Cable it anywhere between the physical *Sum input* and the *Sequencer Input* object
3. Set the transformer up like this:

The *note on* will become a *sustain pedal down* event, the *note off* will become a *sustain pedal up* event. So there you're saved from endless sustain (aka "hanging notes")... 😉
I've chosen Note C1 in this example, you can choose any note (or CC message, when available) for it, though you should remember that this note no longer can be played musically, so choose a note on either extreme end of the scope of your guitar).

Set it up as shown in the pic below.
To activate sustain, hit the note (string) so strong that it generates velocity 127. That'll activate sustain. You cannot deactivate it this way though, but you could set up a second transformer for that (cabled serially with the first), using the lowest possible velocity, which is 1. Another advantage of this setup is that all other velocities are still available as playable notes - as long as you avoid 1 or 127 on that note.

Pay attention to all the details in the screenshots. You can actually see that it works, in the monitor object. I only hit C1 when this throughput was showing in the monitor object. But if you don't see those messages in the monitor object (cabled after the transformer, of course) there must be something not right with either the conditions you set up, or the cabling.

Do you actually use a sound that has sustain?
