hi, i just got an airport express and i'm trying to get it to extend the internet from my SMC wireless router. i have a cable modem wired to the SMC router *supposed to be wirelessly connected to the AX* which will extend my internet further. i tried just plugging it in and it is recognized my my computer, but no internet. i can also print and use airtunes wirelessly through it. WHAT"S GOING ON!?!?!
ok, so i think i got it. the AX light is solid green. if the AX is extending a network, would your computer say your connected to the AX or the network being extended? thanks
You cannot wirelessly extend your existing wireless network established by an SMC router. You can only extend your network if you run an ethernet cable to a remote location, then set the AX up as a wireless access point, attached to your existing network via that cable.
your possitive it won't work wireless from an SMC router? that really *****. i guess i have to get an airport extreme. but for now, i have to plug the SMC router into my airport via an ethernet cord? thanks
You can attach your AX to your existing wireless network as a client. As a client you will be able to stream iTunes and use the AX build in printer server with a compatible USB printer. This is not, however, network extension, where the range of the existing network is increased. The only way to extend a wireless network is to use WDS (with a compatible main base station, which your SMC is not) or as a wireless access point, connected to your existing network via ethernet.
