What is wrong with my ipod Shuffle?
1. Purchased date is December 11, 2005, but I
received as a gift, wrapped, on Christmas. So my
warranty is already 2 weeks old even before the ipod
2. Will not play.
I plugged headphones into jack on the PC and the head
phones work. So that is eliminated.
When I press the buttons down to disable or enable
the buttons, I DO NOT GET ANY BLINKING LIGHTS AS
STATED ON PAGE 15 OF User's Guide.
There are my default 12 songs on the shuffle, I guess
they are default, am I supposed to delete those?
I bought two songs and placed on the ipod shuffle.
I have pressed the darn play/pause button 4 bazillion
times and I get squat.
I had the same problem, my IPOD shuffle would not play. I went to the chat were you get a techician.
You have to go to the website and get the update(mine came with software dated 9/23/05, on the website they have something from November)
Then do the following)of course with the shuffle in the USB jack.
Try restoring it, open Start, Programs, then iPod and iPod updater, then click on restore.
When I went back to Itunes the songs I loaded were still there and the IPOD played. I spent most of the afternonn trying to get this thing to work and was about to chuck it out the window.
you are one of the many [hundreds or maybe thousands?] of recent recipients of a dud ipod shuffle. i'm another, and the boards are full of complaints like ours. the green light remains on continuously instead of shutting off after 3 seconds when you disconnect from your computer, right? that's one of the signals.
call 1 800 275-2273 between 8 am and 8 pm central time. have the serial number on hand [it's almost invisible on the ipod; my granddaughter showed me where it is on the box after i went batty trying to magnify it on the ipod!]
you'll get instructions for sending it back for repair or replacement. it's a cumbersome process but the buggers come with a one-year limited guarantee and that should take care of the cost [except for the buck they charge for "verifying" your credit card number, which they take in case you try to cheat them!]

Well, hallelujah, it works now!
Like several other fellow-sufferers, um I mean, customers, I was not able to get the blasted thing running today after doing all the 'right' things...quite the day-after-Christmas project! Thank you to those before me who posted the helpful tips and advice.
By re-installing with the latest 1.1.3 version (dated 11.17.05) from the Apple web site, as well as by clicking the proper 'eject' button before dis-engaging the iPod from the USB port, we finally got it up and running and my teenage son couldn't have been happier.
I never thought I'd be so overjoyed to hear the heavy tones of Linkin Park come coarsing into my ear drums...I'll be interested to hear my new Paul McCartney CD playing through it someday!

The Christmas 2005 Ipod Shuffle just plain doesn’t work with Windows - either that or batting 0 for 3 is the norm…
My Nephew brought over his brand new Ipod Shuffle this evening, having been unable to get any of the songs he purchased to play on it using his dad’s PC. He really wanted to hear those songs. So I spent the next 5 hours trying to make this work - I have over 20 years in the software industry, and knowing Apple’s reputation, I figured this shouldn’t be a problem. Well, two Windows PCs and a visit to the local Appple store later, I can confirm that the device is 100% compatible with the Apple at the local store (i.e. it is not defective), and 0% compatible with both the Windows XP machine and the Windows 200 laptop at my house; This device has not yet played a single note of a song purchased on a Windows machine. Do you suppose we’ll get our money back?
We would not appear to the only ones having problems. I see quite a bit of traffic on the discussion board at Apple about this, offering various remedies such as using an OLDER version of the software and meticulous ordering of operations under windows:
I’ve tried these various remedies, but not successful. In any case my patience has become exahausted, and my nephew has to leave.
My conclusion is that the Apple folks simply should not have put this product into the market, as they’re attention is elsewhere, and they clearly don’t have the bandwidth to bring it to the quality level expected of their brand. I’ve advised my Nephew to return the device and buy something else to his liking. It’s a real shame Apple has decided to stretch itself too thin on this matter; I have always enjoyed Apple’s groundbreaking efforts in user interface technology; I’ve been sadly disappointed in this first exposure to their line of consumer electronics.
Had same problem, got working after 6 hours of flailing. Wish I knew what finally did the trick. Was some combination of using different ports and different computers, different versions of updates and reformatting from the original disk. What a major pain and Apple was useless. Very dissappointing. BTW when doing the updates, never once did it say that the restart had completed, and every time I used the disk, the reboot never completed after the format (two different computers) May have something to do with the USB flash functionality and using USB 1.1 but that's just a wild guess. Going to bed. Good luck everyone...you'll need it. The software obviously wasn't properly QA'd
