Need help downloading music

I got my daughter an ipod nano for Christmas & am getting VERY frustrated w/trying to download music on it. 1st--we spent ALL of yesterday putting in the cd that came w/it. It told us before we could download music we had to update to the latest software, which I did & saved it. Then I "bought" the song & it told me that I needed to download the latest software again. I've tried it 3 times, 3 times because the 1st time it took 6 hrs! Next, 4, last 3 hrs. What am I doing wrong?! We have Windows XP? Please help, daughter hates me, as this is the main gift she got!

I'm using the latest version of iTunes (6) but I've run into the same problem, being told that my iTunes version is out of date. I've had no trouble downloading music from the iTunes music store, but just cannot upload the music to the iPod. When told that my version was out of date, I was sceptical, as I'd recently downloaded iTunes. Maybe there was a patch to it. No. It was iTunes 6, and the installer executable file was exactly the same size as my original installer, indicating the same file. When I reinstalled, iTunes didn't realise I already had the latest version; it didn't complain, just installed over the last one. But I still get exactly the same error when I try to copy the music that I'd downloaded from the iTunes Music Store. I downloaded the latest QuickTime, but I already had the same version, and so the new one made no difference.

Unlike Chellbell's iPod, mine is an older type (15 Gig, 3rd generation I think it's called). Hard drive is 20 Gig (no storage space problems, 70% free space), 512Meg RAM.

For the technical: I thought that my previous copy of iTunes (one without the music store) might have added a setting to the Windows Registry, and that the new iTunes accidentally looked up the old Registry setting. I'm not an expert with the Registry, but it seems that there is no old setting. I'm probably on the wrong track, anyway.

I too am frustrated. Hope someone can help.

I tried that & it downloaded Quicktime Standalone,
but it still does the same thing. I'm getting ready
to scream & am exhausted over lack of sleep! Don't
know what else to do. This is a nightmare!

Hi, I understand your frustration. I posted an article after yours. I had the same problem. But I've now fixed the problem, and I hope the fix will apply to you as well.

You do indeed have the latest version of iTunes, as I do. But I clicked on an Apple page, given below, that mentioned the problem, and how to fix it. Recently (17/11/2005), there was an iPod update (not iTunes update). It actually updated my iPod, and then I had no worries. I can't be sure it'll work with your iPod because yours is a new one, but if you bought it pre 17th Nov, it's probably considered old. Point your browser at:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93867

The download is about 50 Meg, but it was worth downloading.
Here's a snippet from the web page:

"Some songs in your iTunes library aren't copied to your iPod

Here are the reasons that some files in your iTunes library may not be sent to your iPod:
Software needs to be updated
Download the latest version of the iPod Updater and then update the iPod. After the update is complete, download and install the latest version of iTunes."

There is no need to reinstall iTunes. Well, I didn't have to, anyway.

After you've run the updater installer program, there will an icon to click on in "all programs" on your computer. Be sure to read the readme file because you want to update your iPod rather than erase it! Just follow the instructions, and I hope it works out for you. As the instructions say, you'll have to reconnect your iPod to the mains at some stage, so that the iPod itself is updated, and I think I remember being told to reboot the computer at some stage. Good luck.
