Question

Washed out color on NTSC CTR

I am working on a project that looks great on my digital monitor, but a bit washed out on a CRT (NTSC TV). Is there a color correction, or filter I can use to bring back the colors on the TV? I have done the color correction and the Scopes look good. I have also tried to make use the Broadcast Safe filter.

Any Hints?

Dual 2 GHz G5, Mac OS X (10.4.1)

First, are you absolutely certain that your NTSC monitor is properly calibrated? If it's a consumer set, did you disable any auto-adjust circuitry that tries to interpret what the image should look like?

Also, what DV device or card is converting the digital signal from FCP to analog that's feeding your NTSC monitor? Is there a setup adjustment that needs to be made?

I have seen the problem on two different sets. It is possible that the sets are not configured correctly - I just have not seen this problem before.

One of the TV is showing the video from and iBook via the mini-VGA connector.

The other is showing the video from FCP via a Sony DVMC-DA1.

The end result will be a DVD, but before I start to burn DVDs, I want to make sure I have done what I can from FCP.

Do NOT go by the mini-VGA connection - it will never be correct for video editing purposes on programs to be viewed on TV. However, the connection to the Sony DVMC-DA1 should be correctly outputting an NTSC signal from your Mac's Firewire port.

Load the NTSC color bar generator into the Viewer and adjust your monitor as best possible. If you have a pro monitor, use the "Blue Gun Only" mode to set up the monitor with the color bar output from FCP. If your monitor doesn't have that mode, use a Wratten 47B filter to view the color bars on screen while making the adjustments.
