acomdata external hard drive problem...

ok im running a powermac g5 with panther.
i am transferring a good bit of skate footage from my internal HD to my new external hard drive.
all of a sudden in the middle of the transfer it tells me that i have not put it away properly and by doing so i may have lost some files. so im like okay and click ok. (its very important to realize that i did not do anything and was sitting AWAY from the computer)

and now the external is gone... my computer isnt recognizing it, still plugged in.
so im like alright
and unplug it.

i try to plug it back in, and no dice... try to restart and see if it will mount... no dice...
help?

EDIT: ****... sorry guys wrong forum. hah and first post. if someone could still answer that would be great.

So I'm reading this and I'm like well... how am I supposed to know what a "not put it away properly" message looks like, so I'm like... why can't he just copy and paste the entire text. Then I'm like anyway, and notice you bought a new drive and I'm like there you go, maybe it isn't Mac formated.

So plug it in, open Disc Utility (Apps/Utilities..), select it and choose "erase" and "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" afterwards.

Sorry for mimicking and exaggerating "I'm like..." he he he

I'm assuming you got a dialog complaining about a lost connection and that you didn't eject or unmount the drive.

Since the drive doesn't show up in disc utility, you either:

- have a bad firewire / usb port on your computer. Try a different port or different external drive/camcorder/...

- have a bad usb/firewire cable or external drive, so you should consider returning it to the store.
