Left shift key does not capitalize certain letters

I've searched the boards on this, and haven't found a solution or a similar problem yet. My USB keyboard that came with the computer was working fine for about a year, but lately the left shift key will not capitalize certain letters--first t and then over time y, u, i, o, p--on the top row of letters. The other shift key works but it makes any serious typing cumbersome, and the left shift key is fine on all the other letters. I've unplugged, restarted, checked speech preferences, etc. with no luck. It does not appear to be correlated with an new applications either. Anything else I can try before I have to buy a new keyboard?

Thanks, tried those tips, but still can't get capitals off the left shift for those letters. It seems odd that the left shift key would capitalize some letters, and that the other shift key will capitalize all letters--makes it seem more like a software issue to my admittedly uniformed way of thinking.

Over time, keyboards just tend to fill up with all sorts of snarth and felvin. When I had something similar, I found that simply turning it upside down, shaking (probably best to unplug it first), then vacuuming it out got things working again.

This clearly won't fix any software issues but, OTOH, it is something you can do right away.
