Best free HTML validator

Just switched, and I need your recommendations for the best free stand alone HTML validator. (Not online, and not lint, a validator.)

I used to use A Real Validator, but there's no Mac version.

Installing the W3C one looks brain-bending.

What do you use?

Basic Mac mini stand alone desktop, Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Thanks for the suggestion, but I really need a
validator.

If you don't find someone with a link for a true validator here, you might want to check somewhere like Usenet group comp.infosystems.www.authoring.html. Those that frequent the c.i.w.a.* groups seem to be the pros that will look down at you and won't even talk to you if your code doesn't validate. I think there must be some Mac coders out there that might point you to something that meets your needs.

I search of the Usenet comp.sys.mac.* groups all point to Tidy, iCab, or the online service at w3c.org.

I took a look at the install instructions on the w3c.org site. It didn't look too bad until the point where they recommend installing Fink to install one package. That seems a bit of a steep price in terms of time and effort.

I did find something that looks more promising to install than the w3c.org validator. The Web Design Group has an Offline HTML Validator. It looks like there is only one package that needs to be compiled and installed. The first "make" I tried ended in an error. I'm not knowledgeable enough to determine if this is a simple thing to fix or if the source code will not compile on the PowerPPC architecture. This is by the same author as A Real Validator.

Now that would be the ticket if only some Mac Geek could help Liam Quinn format it for easy installation for Tiger.

I wouldn't dare try to install it myself in case it messed up my new Mac.

Be warned, Liam's brilliant but touchy!

Amaya is for online use, not offline.

HTML Tidy isn't a validator; like a floor mop is not a cleaner.

Imagine an operating theatre being 'tidied' or 'mopped out' before you're sliced open... I think you'd prefer it to be cleaned as in clinically clean.

Still looking....
