Charging/ Disconnect Questions

These questions are all concerning my 5G 30gig Ipod.
*Should the "Do Not Disconnect" icon ALWAYS stay on when connected to my pc, even if the Ipod isn't updating, playing a song, etc?
*When I "eject" my Ipod from iTunes but leave it connected physically, should it continue to charge? It doesn't.
*Using an Apple power adapter and the supplied USB cable, my Ipod will NOT charge. I've tried charging other Ipods (4Gig nano's, specifically) with the exact same setup, and they DO charge. I've also tried using a different Ipod USB cable with the same power adapter and my Ipod, and still no charging. The aftermarket car adapter I have WILL charge my Ipod. My boss' Altec Lansing speaker dock WILL charge my Ipod. Oh, and my cable WILL transfer songs. What gives? This is driving me NUTS.

Barbara, you are correct in that my Ipod is setup for disk mode. So, that would explain why my coworkers nano's only say "do not disconnect" when updating; their's are NOT setup in disk mode. An update on the wall charger: I got it to charge, but only by plugging it in and THEN resetting the Ipod! When plugged into my pc, the Ipod does NOT charge after ejecting in iTunes though.
